Ideen, Impulse, Fragen und Funken, die Leuchtkraft entfalten und Erkenntnis stiften: Mit ihrem Antrag „The Future Research University: Sparking Change That Matters“ formuliert die Universität Freiburg ihren Anspruch, Wandel in Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft und Politik mitzugestalten – mit interdisziplinärer Forschung, die Orientierung gibt, mit Lehre, die kritisches Denken stärkt, und mit Transfer, der Wissen weit über den Campus hinaus trägt.
„Die Exzellenzstrategie ist ein wesentliches Instrument, um die Universität Freiburg als forschungsstarke, vernetzte und verantwortungsbewusste Institution weiterzuentwickeln und Erkenntnisfortschritt auf höchstem Niveau zu sichern“, erläutert Rektorin Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein.
Im Exzellenzwettbewerb des Bundes und der Länder hat die Universität Freiburg am 12. November 2025 ihren Antrag eingereicht. In dessen Mittelpunkt steht der Anspruch, das Selbstverständnis der Universität im 21. Jahrhundert neu zu denken und wissenschaftliches Erkenntnisinteresse eng mit gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung zu verschränken.
In einer von Umbrüchen und Unsicherheiten geprägten Zeit versteht es die Universität Freiburg als eine ihrer zentralen Aufgaben, zu gesellschaftlichen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Entwicklungen lösungsorientiert beizutragen.
Als Ergebnis eines universitätsweiten Prozesses vereint der Antrag vielfältige Stärken und Perspektiven. Auf dem Weg zum Exzellenzstatus folgt Anfang Juni 2026 ein Ortsbesuch, bei dem die Universität ein internationales Gremium von Expert*innen von ihrem Zukunftsentwurf überzeugen will.
Der Antrag ist in die Zukunftsagenda „UFR 2040“ eingebettet. Als strategischer Kompass bündelt sie die langfristige Weiterentwicklung der Universität in Forschung, Lehre, Transfer, Universitätskultur und Governance. Ein Erfolg im Exzellenzwettbewerb würde diese Vorhaben deutlich beschleunigen.
