  2. we can ofc have a laugh about wireless knives that require firmware update, but jokes aside, connecting devices to the internet when they shouldn't may result in injuries, or even deaths.

    fortunately, recent experiment with robot lawn mower have been exactly this - an experiment. but who knows how many other devices made by irresponsible companies like this are out there theverge.com/tech/925696/yarbo

  4. #InternetOfShit, ladies and gentleman:

    The product managers behind this supposed “smart” thermostat didn’t think to check and see if maybe the HVAC is turned off… Via their own damn thermostat. 🙄🫠

  5. As a software programmer for a fully automated kitchen appliance make sure to integrate an auto update that will run

    * while the appliance is in use
    * stop the cooking on failure
    * prophylactical blame the customer's WIFI for the failed upgrade
    * wait for someone pressing okay
    * freeze for reboot or repeat the upgrade to fail again
    * and again
    * and again
    * and again

    Under no circumstances do this on off time or wait until the appliance is no longer busy cooking.

  6. @hamatti predicted this.

    > When the company calls their home appliances "smart", what I hear is:
    > - they spent money on features I don't care about
    > - those features will be worse than standalone devices but will drive them out of market (looking at you TVs)
    > - the appliance is more likely to break
    > - my data is likely being sold to advertisers
    > - when the company loses interest in it and cut support, I will need to buy a new device
    > So no, I don't want "smart" home appliances.

  7. WAS DARF SATIRE

#datenschutz #piraten #biometrie #perso #reisepass #crypto #internetofshit

  8. @spydergrrl I was looking for these yesterday too. WaPo had an article yesterday about some of the weird ones like an app to analyze your pee at home.
