School leavers will be able to apply to become train drivers after the #UK #government confirmed plans to lower the minimum age from 20 to 18 from 30 June 2026. The change, announced during National #Apprenticeship Week, aims to open up skilled careers to younger people and address workforce shortages, with around a quarter of train drivers due to retire by 2030.
Legislation to amend the law will be laid in Parliament later this year, as the rail industry prepares for the creation of Great #British #Railways and an expanding publicly owned network. Ministers say the move will help tackle #youth #unemployment, improve diversity and bring the UK into line with countries such as #Germany and #Australia.
Industry bodies and unions have welcomed the decision, saying it will widen access to well-paid roles, support long-term resilience and allow skills to be passed on to the next generation of drivers.

Contactless card payments are now available on TFI Local Link Mayo’s regular services from 9 February 2026. Passengers can pay single-journey fares using debit and credit cards, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay. The National #Transport Authority confirmed the rollout following successful pilots in #Cavan and #Monaghan and more recent introductions in #Tipperary, #Laois and #Offaly. Daily and weekly tickets will continue to be sold via the Leap website and the TFI Leap Top-up App, while Leap cards, cash and Free Travel Cards remain valid. The upgrade forms part of a wider programme to modernise fare payment systems across #Ireland, improving accessibility and convenience, particularly for rural and regional communities. Representatives said the change offers passengers greater flexibility and supports more sustainable travel.

A new Mayoral-led taskforce aims to transform transport across Greater Lincolnshire. #Transport for Greater #Lincolnshire (TfGL) brings councils, transport firms, businesses, and community partners together to tackle everyday travel frustrations and support local trade. Launched at #Humberside #Airport, the “Get Lincolnshire Moving” workshop identified key transport challenges and practical solutions. Mayor Dame Andrea Jenkyns said the initiative will improve journeys, back local businesses, support jobs and services, and shape the new Local Transport Plan to reflect residents’ needs. Ideas from the launch will feed directly into future transport planning, with the Taskforce meeting regularly to drive progress.

#Transport for #London Freedom of Information release:
#TfL has published its response to an FOI request about the outer boundary of Zone 6 in #Surrey. The requester sought the rationale for setting the Zone 6 boundary at #Surbiton on routes to #Guildford and #Woking, and at #Hampton Court for Thames Ditton and Hampton Court stations, as well as any related meeting minutes or correspondence on extending Zone 6 in Elmbridge. TfL said the zonal system was introduced around 30 years ago, broadly based on six concentric zones across London, with few changes since and only where revenue impacts allowed. TfL confirmed it has no power to extend zones to stations outside its network, stating this would be for the train operator and the Department for Transport. It holds no relevant correspondence and no minutes from a May 2025 meeting with Monica Harding MP. TfL noted fares are mainly based on station-to-station pairings and referred queries to South Western Railway.

Great Western #Railway (GWR) has introduced the UK’s first battery-only passenger train into service, with the Class 230 entering operation on the #Greenford branch line on Saturday 31 January. The train replaced a diesel unit on the 05:30 service from West Ealing following 22 months of trials of fast-charge technology. Last year it set a world record by travelling 200.5 miles on a single charge. GWR said the trial shows battery trains can provide a reliable alternative where electrification is not feasible, supporting plans to replace ageing diesel fleets. Network Rail said the project marks an important step towards lower-emission rail #travel. The train will initially run on Saturdays as further performance data is gathered.

#TfL is seeking views on proposed walking and cycling improvements at the A10 Great Cambridge Road and Lincoln Road junction. The consultation runs until Friday 13 March 2026. The plans aim to improve safety and access through upgraded pedestrian crossings on all arms, a new direct east–west signalised cycle crossing, wider footways and shared-use areas. Proposals include new or improved signalised, zebra and Toucan crossings, raised tables and wider central islands. Some vehicle movements would be restricted, including changes to service road access, the removal of certain left turns and the closure of a central reservation turn-around. Limited informal parking would be removed to maintain visibility. The scheme would link with the London Borough of Enfield’s planned #Enfield Town to Ponders End walking and cycling route. Bus services would remain unchanged, with limited long-term traffic impacts expected.

Under Mayoral Decision MD3464, the Mayor has approved changes to #Transport for #London fares from 1 March 2026, balancing affordability with financial sustainability. Bus and tram #fares will be frozen until 5 July 2026, with the adult PAYG single fare remaining at £1.75 and daily and weekly caps unchanged. Tube and other #TfL rail fares where Tube prices apply will rise by six per cent overall, while Travelcards and PAYG caps will be frozen in line with national rail policy. All concessions, including those for children, older people and disabled passengers, will remain in place. The package results in an average TfL fare increase of 3.2 per cent, meeting funding assumptions agreed with government while keeping fares below long-term inflation and National Rail increases. A further decision will be taken later in 2026 on whether to extend the bus and tram fare freeze.

#London Northwestern #Railway and West #Midlands Railway will return to public ownership on 1 February 2026, bringing all West Midlands #Trains services under government control. From that date, around half of all rail journeys overseen by Great #British #Railways will be run by publicly owned operators. The government says the move supports plans for a simpler, more integrated rail system with more reliable, affordable and better-connected services. The routes connect #Liverpool, #Birmingham, London and destinations across the West Midlands, supporting jobs, education and local #economies. West Midlands Trains becomes the fourth operator to transfer under the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act, alongside a rail fare freeze. More than 8,500 publicly owned services now run each day, with official data showing stronger performance on punctuality and cancellations. Further transfers are planned as Great British Railways legislation progresses.
