  1. »A shift has taken place in the past few years, from the ambition of the Green Deal to tackle hazardous substances, especially in consumer products and to halve pesticide use, to the industry summit tomorrow (being held between the Belgian EU presidency and big business, including the chemicals industry) with its promotion of an Industry Deal including demands for less regulation and more subsidy for business’ energy bills.«

  3. #EU #BigTech #Lobbying #RevolvingDoors: "Big Tech might be the EU's biggest lobby spender by sector, but a little-known band of economic consultancies are still managing to fly under the radar on behalf of their tech clients. These consultancies are effectively 'spamming the regulator' with supposedly neutral reports to influence the EU's competition policy and smooth the path for Big Tech monopolies and mergers. What's worse, the Commission's DG Competition in charge of competition policy enjoys a regular revolving door with these consultancies."

  11. Shocking article on how big companies (in this case big IP holders) have lobbied massively and dirty against EU citizens and got the EU parliament to vote for or of the EU Copyright Directive. So this prompts the question who is the EU parliament actually representing. I guess I already know.

  12. "You’ve certainly experienced it: you grab your phone to do something specific, and end up getting lost in the maze of stimuli – sounds, colours, videos, notifications, urgent messages –so much so that you forget why you picked up the phone in the first place and stay far longer on it than planned. We keep inventing new words to describe aspects of the experience, whether it’s doomscrolling, internet rabbit holes, or brainrot. The good news is, this isn’t just something that happens to you. There’s a growing political consensus that this is a structural problem by design, that Big Tech has gone too far, and EU legislation is on the way to give you more control over addictive features in social media apps. The bad news is, Big Tech has begun a full scale lobbying battle against this legislation.

As the European Commission is preparing rules to rein in the addictive design of social media app – as part of the forthcoming Digital Fairness Act – the tech industry is drawing on its considerable lobbying firepower to oppose it. The legislation comes in response to growing concerns about the public health impacts of social media addiction, both for children, adolescents, and adults alike. But the Big Tech giants behind Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and other social media apps are pushing back. Keeping people on the apps for as long as possible is a central part of their business model and restrictions in addictive features would hurt their profits and power. In its lobbying, Big Tech aims to capitalize on the fact that EU decision-makers – with Commission President von der Leyen in the lead – are currently heavily prioritising industrial competitiveness via deregulation over other concerns. This means there are major new obstacles for legislation to pass."

  14. @asanpin Done. Mixed feelings. To concentrate solely on FIMI does not sound wise. In the USA DIMI is at present the most urgent problem (Domestic Information Manipulation and Interference), which has already halted research necessary for informed citizens in a democracy, and IMI in general is dangerous, no matter its source.

In Finland, we don't usually speak about "democracies", because the actual distribution of political power is more important itself, and comes in degrees. Some NATO-countries, e.g, are not democratic, and some even oligarchic, or at least act like ones. There is no "West" or "the democratic world" but in some not so democratic ruler's and marketer's jargon. That jargon manifests itself maybe too much in the WFW-report. Some parts of it were educational, some clearly outdated, superficial, and/or unnecessarily fear-mongerous. The Alan Turing report is on quite another level with its delailed scenarios for influence in Ch. 5, turing.ac.uk/sites/default/fil

With respect to the AI-danger there have been proposals for an IPCC-like body to steer and regulate at least something, nature.com/articles/d41586-023, but guess which former "democracy" just dissociated itsef from even the original IPCC? And referring to, e.g, the dual-use problem, guess who frustrated at least part of the EU AI-Act, corporateeurope.org/en/2023/02

My advice for most everybody would be to stop using tools which use you, and maybe instead start to read real texts, preferably more than 10 pages long. Important things don't come easily, and the hustle we constantly feel, isn't ours.

  15. #PFAS are forever?

How the #ChemicalIndustry is fighting back against regulation

    13.07.2023

"Corporate Europe Observatory uncovers the story of how the toxics industry is fighting back against the upcoming regulation of PFAS or 'forever chemicals', which are found in everything from frying pans to food packaging. Using access to documents requests and LobbyFacts data we show how chemical companies paint themselves as reasonable, concerned actors, whilst at the same time privately pushing hard for exemptions for their own PFAS products, and warning in dramatic terms of the economic fallout of banning them. Meanwhile the real catastrophe – the impacts on human health and the environment – as well as the costs of clean up, continue apace.

"The companies producing PFAS knew for decades about the toxicity of these chemicals, but they chose to do nothing about it. Recent academic analysis of previously secret documents from DuPont and 3M shows that companies knew PFAS were 'highly toxic when inhaled and moderately toxic when ingested' by 1970, 40 years before the public health community. The analysis further notes that the industry used several strategies also common to #tobacco, #pharma, and other industries to influence science and regulation, including 'suppressing unfavorable research and distorting public discourse'.

"According to documents analysed by the news show #Zembla, #DuPont knew 30 years ago that it was seriously contaminating the groundwater under the #Dordrecht plant in the #Netherlands and in the surrounding area with large quantities of toxic and carcinogenic PFAS. Sidenote In 2022 it was recommended not to eat vegetables or fruit coming from gardens within a one kilometre radius of this PFAS factory."
