Coco Jones Was Called a Racial Slur While Posing for Photos, but Her Response Said Everything
Grammy-winning singer and actress Coco Jones was simply enjoying a photoshoot in New York City when a woman decided that seeing a beautiful, successful, dark-skinned Black woman commanding attention was somehow offensive.
The incident, captured in a vlog documenting Coco’s time at New York Fashion Week in September, resurfaced this week and quickly went viral.
An unidentified woman began shouting insults while Coco posed for photographs. The heckler exclaimed, “Ew!” before calling Coco disgusting and making derogatory remarks about her Blackness. Coco responded with a sarcastic thank-you and continued posing.
When the woman persisted, Coco declared, “Black and proud.” She later blew the heckler a kiss and walked away with her team. And good for her. What stands out is the way this stranger appeared determined to make Coco feel uncomfortable simply for being visibly Black and receiving attention.
There is nothing insulting about being Black. There is nothing undesirable about dark skin. Yet the heckler spoke as though Blackness itself was something Coco should feel ashamed of. That is what makes the encounter so revealing.
Why Does Seeing Dark-Skinned Black Women Shine Provoke Such Hostility?
There is a particular kind of hostility that some dark-skinned Black women encounter when they are beautiful, confident, successful and attracting attention.
Sometimes it comes from non-Black women. Sometimes it comes from lighter-skinned women within the Black community. And sometimes the prejudice is disguised as a compliment rather than delivered as an outright insult.
It can be subtle: someone unnecessarily emphasising your complexion, making backhanded remarks about your attractiveness or expressing surprise that you’re receiving attention. Other times, as Coco’s video illustrates, the hostility is unmistakable.
We don’t know the heckler’s racial identity, appearance or motivations beyond what her comments reveal. But the incident raises an important conversation about racism, colourism and the resentment some women direct towards dark-skinned Black women who refuse to make themselves smaller.
And no, acknowledging those experiences is not an accusation against every non-Black or light-skinned woman. But Black women should not have to repeatedly qualify their experiences to make conversations about prejudice more comfortable for everyone else.

People have praised Coco for remaining calm, and she handled the encounter beautifully. But I also dislike the expectation that Black women must always respond to racism with grace.
Why should the person being insulted have to demonstrate perfect composure while the person delivering the abuse faces no comparable expectations?
Coco could have confronted the woman, expressed her anger or walked away without acknowledging her. None of those responses would have made the heckling acceptable.
Her decision not to engage was hers to make, not another standard Black women should be forced to meet. And consider something else: if a successful celebrity like Coco Jones can encounter this treatment while surrounded by photographers and her team, imagine the experiences of everyday dark-skinned women without that visibility or support.
Ultimately, Coco refused to give the heckler the reaction she appeared to want. But the bigger issue isn’t how gracefully Coco handled racism. It’s why a Black woman enjoying her success still has to deal with someone treating her skin colour as an insult.

Everyone has a retry story. Mine: an agent that retried a malformed request eleven times before anyone noticed, each attempt replaying the full conversation. The request was never going to succeed — a 400 doesn't heal — but the retry policy didn't care, because it only looked at "did it throw?"
Our working rules now:
- Retry timeouts, 429s and 5xx — with backoff, jitter, and the server's
Retry-Afterwinning over our schedule. - Never retry 400/401/403. Fail fast, surface it, fix the request.
- A retry budget, not just a count: retries get a slice of the task's total budget, then the task fails honestly.
- If it dies mid-stream, restart the message cleanly — never append to a half-generated answer.
What I haven't settled: provider 529s / overloaded errors during peak. Retry in place, or fail over to a different model immediately and accept the quality change?
