  1. Ah, #BorgBackup, for those who like their backups served with a side of #jargon salad and a sprinkle of #buzzword dressing. 🌟✨ Because who doesn’t want to store their digital clutter under layers of fancy-sounding tech that only 3 people on Reddit pretend to understand? 🤖🔒 Enjoy feeling like a tech wizard while using something that’s basically a glorified zip file with a superiority complex. 🎩🧙‍♂️

  7. @luc For this server, I am using #duplicity (wrapped in #duply). Originally, it used #restic, but the pruning ended up using too much RAM (but restic has improved this, and I've upgraded from a 4GB system to 32GB since then, so maybe I'll switch back to restic or #borgbackup sometime soon, since I found out that duplicity does not back up ACLs...).

I'm also still using restic (with a custom script) for my laptop backups, and borg (with borgmatic) for some other servers/raspberry pis.

  8. @borgbackup
    @sophie

Just to be sure/safe, this is what I see when I do borg list:

borg list /Backup/backup-desk7802-m330625::5ad87f-a8ac0d91 | grep geodb

    lrwxrwxrwx user grp 23 Fri, 2025-01-17 11:31:14 home/user/geodb -> /hdd/dados/geodb

I understand then that I'm saving the link, not the data. Correct?

What is throwing me off is that using #PikaBackup I can look at the archive and it has the link. If I click on it, I see it's contents. It's probably looking at the data on disk then.

  9. Today I added support for `borg create --list` output to #ncdu-export, allowing you to interactively preview a #borg snapshot creation inside of #ncdu.

I also found and fixed/worked around a nasty bug making #ncdu crash when emoji file names were encountered:

  11. Pretty happy with 's GUI (hat tip to @amin for the recommendation).

4x hourly backup take only ~30 seconds to run and consume as little as half a megabyte.

The backups aren't natively user-browsable like backintime's was, but I'll take that in exchange for not having incremental backups that are no less than 111MiB because everything is a symlink.

  16. I just migrated my last #bup backup routine to #BorgBackup.

  17. Any opinions about #bup vs #borgbackup?
Specifically for large files changing only to some degree, like VM images, and regarding pruning snapshots older than X months. Store on local encrypted disk, so (lack of) encryption is not an issue.

  18. Yesterday I replaced one of the two 4TB HDDs in my #Synology #DS218 #NAS, I checked before and found it is #hotswap, so I just removed the first #HDD and waited what would happen.
As soon as I removed the first 4 TB HDD from the NAS it started beeping every 3 seconds. I then went to my computer, checked what was the reason, there was an alarm "degraded storage" and a button to stop the beeping. It was only an alarm it seems, so not an error, the currently running #borgbackup just continued.
So I took the frame with the 4 TB HDD, removed the HDD and put in the new 8 TB HDD I bought. Then I went back to the NAS, slided in the frame, checked on the computer screen and selected "repair storage pool", it asked if I wanted to add the new HDD and started cloning the RAID 1.
At that time the NAS was 2.44 TB storage used, which translates to about 70%. I the morning (about 9h later) the process was finished. I then started an extended #SMART check, which is still running now and also started a manual "Data Scrubbing", which should check that all data is mirrored, this process is already finished.
So as soon as the SMART check is done I will replace the second HDD and will then have the new storage capacity of 8 TB.

I plan to use the two HDDs in external cases for another fan less computer which I want to used for my #Nextcloud on a #Docker based home server.

So the point of this post is to say how easy to use those #Synology #NAS are. Great and easy to use product.
  19. ... toll! ich habe es mir sogar aufgeschrieben:

    sudo docker exec -it paperless_ngx-webserver-1 document_exporter ../export

  20. Thinking about setting up a home #borg server on an unused #RaspberyPi 4.

    Questions for the #HiveMind:

    • How much RAM does a borg server need to manage about 3TB of backups?
    • How big of a USB disk do I need for the / partition for RasbperryPi OS with no GUI?
    • Does borg deduplicate files between users' backups, or only within a single user's backups?
