While GNOME 50 is rightfully being celebrated today, it reminded me that I never posted about Déjà Dup 50.

No big changes there, just a nice collection of bug fixes.

But there are some exciting bits of news in Debian/Ubuntu land: Debian finally got the package back in “testing” (it had been blocked by some old Rclone security issues) and Ubuntu finally got Restic into main and switched the default backend to Restic.

So stating with Ubuntu 26.04 there will be a gradual uptick in Restic backups, and hopefully happier Déjà Dup users.

At some point in the last few months, deja dup has gotten unbearably slow. When I use duplicity directly with backblaze, my backups take 10 minutes; with deja dup (presumably using restic now) it takes over an hour.

Part of the problem was that at some point in these updates, several of my ignored folders were not being ignored (confirmed by looking at dconf), but I fixed that weeks ago.

Any thoughts?

Quick note: if you are using #Duplicity (even via #DejaDup), we're seeing a bug with the new version 3.0.6 where it doesn't recognise the encryption password. Reported upstream here:

So, do if you see this issue too, downgrade to 3.0.5. On @fedora , this would be `sudo dnf downgrade duplicity`.

Ab wann wäre eine NAS für's Backup zweier Laptops (1x Arbeit und 1x Privat) geboten? Andersrum: wie lange ist die Backup-Lösung mit einfachen externen Festplatten ausreichend?

Wie haltet ihr es damit?

Ich frage, weil mir der Ressourcen- und Stromverbrauch für #NAS für so eine "kleine" Problematik ungerechtfertigt hoch erscheint.

@[email protected] @nixCraft depends on several factors like the type of drives used, hardware acceleration, what kind of encryption is being used, etc.

But generally that should be possible.with AES-Ni - Acceleration and some fast SSDs as well as a lot of RAM.

Granted, I'd recommend setting up #DejaDup / #duplicity, #rdiffbackup or a similar #backup system anyway.

Otherwise one can backup and restore a #ZFS based off #Snapshots that can be exported and imported.
