Thinking about using either BackInTime or bup with Kup for local backups to have stuff in multiple formats. BackInTime is on the AUR, and bup's readme mentions that it's not as well-tested as tar and stuff.

I just migrated my last #bup backup routine to #BorgBackup.

#bupcron is a wrapper for #bup.

bup-cron is a wrapper for bup which adds support for configuration files and related backup tasks. With bup-cron multiple directories can be backed up simply and directly, without requiring a special shell script. bup-cron can also snapshot LVM volumes, reparity bup repositories, and exclude certain directories, all in a cron-friendly way.

#bup is a #Git based #backup system.

bup backs up groups of files incrementally, meaning that all versions of a set of files are stored. bup stores backups efficiently and in an accessible way, meaning 100 versions of a directory won't take up 100× the size, and you'll be able to restore any version easily. bup can quickly sync backups over SSH, and backups can have parity added for additional integrity.

Do I see it right that #bup was removed from #Debian #testing already in 2017 because a test didn't build with the then current git, a patch was available and never applied?

So, question answered at least for my use case..
Trying to #backup a 119GB VM from an external SSD to an external HDD, #borgbackup started reading quite fast compared to #bup, but then repeatable twice failed at the same 21.10GB with a read error leaving the SSD in a broken non-responsive state, I had to unmount and unplug/plug and mount again. Seems it's stressing it somehow too much, never had that with this SSD, I even build large projects on it. The bup backup went fine.

Any opinions about #bup vs #borgbackup?
Specifically for large files changing only to some degree, like VM images, and regarding pruning snapshots older than X months. Store on local encrypted disk, so (lack of) encryption is not an issue.
