"Glittering Sea," Hiroshi Yoshida, 1926.
Yoshida (1876-1950) was one of Japan's great masters of the shin-hanga school, a revival of traditional Japanese ukiyo-e style but in a modern context.
Yoshida traveled the world and studied Western art styles, but his own work was strictly in the unique shin-hanga style, even doing landscapes of famous sites in other countries in his uniquely Japanese style, including scenes of the Taj Majal and the Grand Canyon.
It's hard to believe this is a woodblock print; it's done by using the same block over and over, layering colors and carefully coloring different sections. Like many of his works, it's remarkable in its peacefulness and depiction of light.
