🏗️🛤️ Contracts have been signed to restore passenger rail services to #Portishead and Pill for the first time since 1964, marking a major milestone for the long-awaited scheme. Two new stations and around three miles of track will be built, with construction now under way and services expected to begin in winter 2028/29. The project, involving Morgan Sindall, Colas Rail and AmcoGiffen, will reconnect more than 50,000 people to the rail network. Backers say it will improve access to jobs, education and services while supporting economic growth across the West of #England. The line is also expected to cut travel times to #Bristol and ease road congestion. Funded by the Department for Transport and local authorities, the scheme is seen as a key step in strengthening regional transport links and encouraging sustainable development.

The deal strengthens Arriva’s position in northern Italy and more than doubles its market presence in the region, where it already operates services between #Chioggia and #Venice.
As part of the transaction, Arriva also acquires Martinibus, a long-established shuttle operator providing airport, port and urban connections, along with three depots in Marghera and Mestre (Venice). Arriva holds an option to purchase the remaining 20% of La Linea in the future.
La Linea operates more than 7.6 million kilometres annually, with around 40% of its fleet already zero emission and further electrification planned over time.

🇩🇪 Solaris Bus & Coach has won a contract to supply 19 hydrogen-powered buses to #German operator SWK Mobil Krefeld, with delivery scheduled for 2027. The order includes nine 12-metre Urbino 12 models and ten articulated Urbino 18 vehicles, all powered by hydrogen fuel cells driving electric motors. The buses will feature modern safety systems, camera-based mirrors, and accessibility provisions such as ramps and wheelchair spaces. This continues a partnership dating back to 2011 and follows a 2023 order for 10 similar #buses delivered in 2025. SWK will again use Solaris’s eSConnect system for fleet management. Solaris has now delivered over 800 #hydrogen buses across #Europe, with #Germany a key market.

#Alstom has launched its first #UK supported internship scheme, ASPIRE, aimed at improving job prospects for students with special educational needs and #disabilities (SEND). Based at its Derby Litchurch Lane Works, the programme offers hands-on experience with structured support, in partnership with Derby College. Interns are contributing to the CrossCountry Voyager refurbishment, gaining practical engineering skills. The initiative responds to low employment rates among people with learning disabilities in England, currently 4.8%. Alstom says the scheme is designed to build confidence, skills and pathways into paid work. Two interns have joined initially, with plans to expand the programme across more UK sites.

🚉🇮🇪 Iarnród Éireann plans to seek approval for two new rail stations in #Cork, at #Blackpool and #Dunkettle, marking the first of eight under the Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme in #Ireland. The scheme aims to deliver trains every ten minutes on routes to Cobh, Midleton and Mallow. Blackpool will serve the Mallow line, while Dunkettle will act as a major park-and-ride hub linked to Cobh and Midleton services.
The wider programme includes completed and ongoing upgrades such as a new platform at Kent Station, track doubling to Midleton and network re-signalling, with electrification and further stations planned. More than 5,200 daily passengers are forecast at the two sites by 2035. Construction could begin in 2027, subject to approval and funding, and take up to two years.
Both stations will include accessible platforms, parking, cycling facilities and infrastructure for future electrification.

🚴♀️🚴🇮🇪 Bike Week 2026 runs from 9–17 May across #Ireland, with the National #Transport Authority (NTA) announcing hundreds of #cycling events nationwide. All 31 local authority areas are involved, working with sports partnerships.
Events include family rides, community cycles, adaptive MTB sessions, learn-to-cycle and repair workshops, heritage/greenway rides and school events.
Anne Shaw, NTA CEO, said engagement has been strong and encouraged participation.

🇮🇪 The National #Transport Authority (NTA) and #autism charity AsIAm have relaunched the “Prepare Me AsIAm for Public Transport” campaign to improve #accessibility across the Transport for #Ireland network. The initiative offers practical tools, including how-to videos and activity packs, to help Autistic people and their families plan and use public transport with greater confidence in Ireland.
With at least 1 in 20 schoolchildren identified as #Autistic, and more adults receiving diagnoses, #accessible transport is increasingly important for independence and access to work. The campaign aims to reduce barriers such as sensory overload and uncertainty when travelling.
AsIAm said the initiative supports more confident journey planning, while the NTA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public transport serves all passengers. The campaign builds on ongoing efforts to make the network more inclusive.
