That sort of 'society" invokes my curiosity but not real interest. Thank you very much for your input, I'll still poke around a bit but not too deeply.
Sometimes that can also ruin memories. It's a terrible thing that facts rule over perceptions..

I'm still slowly working through translating Rudolf Rocker's memoirs, and I've just been revising a chapter that reminds me of one of the reasons why I'm doing this in the first place: he knows how to call out bullshit when he sees it, and I think he does it in a way that's still pertinent in the 21st century. (He can also spin a good yarn, when he gets going.)
In this passage, he's criticizing a proposal raised at the second congress of the Second International in Brussels in 1891. He's really clear about what "actions, not words" should mean, and how organizational and movement leadership can just become self-serving/self-perpetuating cliques, offering mostly platitudes, rather than actually organizing people to act in their own self-interest. He also does not suffer class-reductionist fools gladly, which is always refreshing.
In this case, the proposal in question pertains to the rising tide of militarism in Europe, which ultimately led to WWI. Please note that the Liebknecht here is Wilhelm, not Karl. (Karl was Wilhelm's son.)

Vaillant and Liebknecht’s proposed declaration was, in fact, a perfect specimen of vulgar Marxist truisms. It emphasized that militarism is an unavoidable consequence of the capitalist system of exploitation; that any attempt at demilitarization and establishing international peace without consideration for economic conditions would be fruitless, even if it was motivated by the noblest of intentions; that only the establishment of a socialist social order could end militarism and bring about peace among nations; and that therefore anyone who wanted to eliminate war was obliged to align themselves with international social democracy as the only inherently peaceful parties. The resolution ended with a declaration that the ruling classes would bear sole responsibility before humanity and history for the catastrophe of a world war. It called on the workers of all countries to oppose chauvinistic agitation, energetically protest against any eagerness for war, and accelerate the triumph of socialism by helping to organize the international proletariat.
The resolution said essentially nothing at all with respect to a practical working class effort to prevent the war. Its fatalistic thinking could only lead workers to resign themselves to that terrible evil as though it were an unavoidable fact, while leaving the actual abolition of war to a socialist society of the future. There was nothing to remind the workers that war was impossible without their involvement as the producing class. The authors of the resolution completely failed to recognize that their position denied the workers’ movement any practical relevance in the work that the moment called for. Every social affliction could ultimately be blamed on the existence of capitalist society. If the workers, as social actors, weren’t able to exert their influence on such an important matter, how could anyone imagine they would dare to think of improving their status in the current economic order? The entire task of trade unions, which the congress had championed with a special resolution, was treated as just a pointless effort that was doomed to fail, and Lassalle's fundamental rejection of union work on the basis of the “iron law of wages” was affirmed.
