  3. "Frosty the Snowman" is a song written by #WalterJackRollins and #SteveNelson, and first recorded by #GeneAutry and the #CassCountyBoys in 1950 and later recorded by #JimmyDurante in that year. It was written after the success of Autry's recording of "#RudolphTheRedNosedReindeer" the previous year. Rollins and Nelson shopped the new song to Autry, who recorded "Frosty" in search of another seasonal hit. Like "Rudolph".

In case folks were unaware, much of the voice acting for those was done in Canada.

And this year is the 60th anniversary of the first broadcast of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer!

That one was recorded by a team of well known Canadian CBC voice actors in Toronto. (Singer Burl Ives as the narrator snowman was the exception.). The stop-motion animation was done in Japan.

Paul Soles who voiced Hermey the elf is also known as the voice of Spider-Man from the 1960s cartoons.

There was a CBC television retrospective from the 50th anniversary. The voice actors attributed the Rudolph special’s enduring appeal to its messages about bullying and acknowledgement of the experiences of outcasts.

  13. A 1964 ad for RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER — which is back on NBC tonight 8pm ET (and Dec 11 at 8pm).

The Rankin/Bass classic debuted on THE GENERAL ELECTRIC FANTASY HOUR — and the characters appeared in ads for G.E. products.

  20. Rewatching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Santa Claus is definitely the villain. He encourages everyone to ostracize Rudolph. It's only later that they warm up to him and let him pull the sleigh when they realize they can exploit his ‘handicap’.

  21. If you want to get your "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" fix this year, you'll have to change the channel. 22. RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER and FROSTY THE SNOWMAN *won't* air on CBS this Christmas for the first time in 50+ years.

But unlike the PEANUTS specials, they'll still be on free TV!

  28. Watching the classic Christmas shows with my kids, I realized that when I was growing up, I always felt a bit like I belonged on the Island of Misfit Toys, because I never quite fit in. Turns out there were other misfits like me out in the world! It just took a while to find them.

  30. Love how the Rankin & Bass specials tell a story without explaining any of the magical elements (talking snowman, the hows & whys of Rudolph’s glowing nose, etc.)

    #RudolphTheRedNosedReindeer
    Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows

    All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
    They never let poor Rudolph
    Join in any reindeer games
