What’s Nashville have that Seattle doesn't? New Jim Crow, abortion ban, low wages, unchecked poverty, and copious gun deaths.

  3. @urbanistorg “The commission also endorsed allowing the full slate of modest development types — cottage housing, courtyard apartments, duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, fiveplexes, sixplexes, townhouses, and stacked flats — citywide, rather than just six of those as required by state law.” #MissingMiddle #zoning #housing #Washington

  4. @urbanistorg What's frustrating to me, in addition to the project being pushed back again and again, is that the Office of the Waterfront doesn't say WHY it has been delayed. I'd assume it's simply because accommodating people cycling is not their priority. What's your take?

Still absolutely baffled and enraged by this, it'd be pretty hard not to see this as retribution.

Councilmember Balducci has been one of the strongest advocates for doing the right things with system expansion.

  8. "[...] the PSRC’s analysis suggests statewide middle housing reform would add something in the ballpark of 200,000 extra homes in Puget Sound over the next 20 years, which are sorely needed to address the dire shortfall of homes and affordability crisis." - by @urbanistorg

  9. @typewriteralley #Seattle's commitment to #SchoolStreets #StayHealthyStreets #StreetCafes and #HomeZones is an excellent move #MayorHarrell.

It makes me happy to see that US cities CAN change course and provide #StreetsForPeople.

Thank you to advocates like @GordonOfSeattle #SeattleNeighborhoodGreenways @qag @urbanistorg @seabikeblog who have been amplifying and piloting these ideas for the past decade. Go Seattle Go!

  10. Op-Ed: Closing Seattle Schools Is Still a Bad Idea

"Rankin’s memo and the sweeping austerity that it floats ought to become a central topic of discussion and debate during the hiring of a new superintendent, as well as in the fall school board election campaigns. Candidates should be asked whether they would support or oppose a new school closure effort or 'strategic abandonment' of district programs and services."

  11. Whelp, Amtrak just yanked most of CascadiaRail's trains out from under us.

It's supposedly corrosion concerns? But with this administration who even fucking knows. My _default_ reaction is to assume they're lying.

This is after yanking our previous trains and handing us these as temporaries pending the new trains we're buying - _ourselves_, as always - for 2026.

So now we've got one (1) train a day up and down the line, which is to say, fuck. everything.

They'll be running busses instead, which we can all agree suck.

  12. ‘“We believe additional [Sounder] trips would be supported by the public and would address ridership demand in 2036,” Saxe said. If we were to engage with BNSF on the possibility of adding new trips, we would continue to track ridership trends as well.”

Saxe added that Sounder capital projects uniquely qualify for Federal Railroad Administration grants and financing, unlike Sound Transit’s other modes. ' theurbanist.org/2024/06/15/sou #CommuterRail #RegionalRail #Sounder #Seattle #Tacoma @urbanistorg
