Through-to-Vancouver heavy rail service is out north of Seattle due to flooding. Scheduled to return Saturday. CascadiaRail to Vancouver, basically.
According to Sound Transit's website, however, Sounder commuter rail service is still scheduled to run at this time. (2:45pm 10 December)

I missed this article on Cascadian high-speed rail planning last week:
https://www.theurbanist.org/2025/11/10/cascadia-forges-ahead-on-high-speed-rail-despite-headwinds/
There are big issues _particularly_ right now, but, well, everybody still wants it.

WSDOT is asking for input on the Washington State Rail Plan. Fill out the quick survey here: https://engagekh.mysocialpinpoint.com/WAStateRailPlan

Whelp, Amtrak just yanked most of CascadiaRail's trains out from under us.
It's supposedly corrosion concerns? But with this administration who even fucking knows. My _default_ reaction is to assume they're lying.
This is after yanking our previous trains and handing us these as temporaries pending the new trains we're buying - _ourselves_, as always - for 2026.
So now we've got one (1) train a day up and down the line, which is to say, fuck. everything.
They'll be running busses instead, which we can all agree suck.

YouTuber "Lucid Stew" is back with another video about Cascadia High Speed Rail, this time with a thought experiment of building HSR exclusively by taking lanes away from I-5!
Certainly not a realistic nor desirable scenario (for many reasons outlined in the video) but as a tongue-in-cheek proposal we can learn a lot:
-
Via Axios: "Train travel in the Pacific Northwest is roaring back, with Amtrak Cascades trains seeing a 75% jump in ridership last year."

@ingalls @smitha I'd also humbly suggest that none of the YVR/SEA/PDX airports needs to connect to High Speed Rail. Here in #BellinghamWA we have an airport with lots of spare capacity. Connect HSR to our airport and to the city centers in Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland. You all can use our airport for medium and long haul flights!
#CascadiaRail #HighSpeedRail #HSR #transit #airports #AirTravel
-
@ingalls @smitha Although I disagree that all three airports are "near" to the city centers... for each one it feels pretty long on local transit to get downtown! 47 min from PDX, 40 min from SEA, 26 min from YVR.
When we build a new #HighSpeedRail alignment, we only need to hook up to one airport in the region. All other HSR stations should be placed closer to the city centers. Rail passengers from all over the region could use that one airport for medium & long haul flights.

New video from prolific High Speed Rail Youtuber "Lucid Stew" about Cascadia High Speed rail, which sketches out the details of a new hypothetical route between Eugene and Vancouver, BC. What do you think of this route?

Hey people in Washington State, have you written to WSDOT to ask them to revise their Amtrak Cascades long term plans to include faster travel times? Comments close on April 18, so please write now!

The Washington State Department of Transportation (#WSDOT) released a Preliminary Service Development Plan (SDP) for #AmtrakCascades, a step towards creating a blueprint for improving the route over the next twenty years.
Check out these preliminary alternative service diagrams!
While this is not true #HighSpeedRail, these are very important incremental improvements to speed & frequency that will make a big difference in the near term.

The transportation solution to lots of population growth simply can't be everyone in a car alone. How many elephants can you fit in a wine glass, after all? (I just recently read that line somewhere and it's such an apt description of cars in a downtown.)

Then the 2019 business case analysis moved forward with two scenarios, of 21 and 30 roundtrips. So the 30 roundtrips mentioned in the Microsoft-sponsored Seattle Times article is certainly the high end, but not outside the realm of possibility.
In the scenarios in this chart, note that most of the options include a mix of local and express trains, so a town like #BellinghamWA might only get 12 trips per day.
-
The initial 2017 study looked at the cost recovery ratio for various numbers of round trips on the new HSR line. Looks like the sweet spot is around 12 to 24 roundtrips, and it slowly starts dropping off after that.

Interesting news-ish article about #HighSpeedRail in the #SeattleTimes sponsored by Microsoft.
I can't quibble with the content (it all holds water) and it's a good promotional summary of the topic.
The whole sponsored thing is a bit "ick", but whatever, newspapers aren't what they once were! And it's a nice counter to the regressive, anti-HSR editorials recently published in the Seattle Times.

"Oregon urged to join planning for high-speed rail"
"High-speed rail has the potential to not only catalyze the transformation of the Cascadia corridor by connecting major job markets, increasing international tourism and creating thousands of jobs, but also helping us reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“We as a state need to begin thinking and talking about the future of our mega-region before we are left behind.”
-
We believe these investments will provide unmatched long-term benefits for our region, and are a necessary complement to short-term improvements for the existing #AmtrakCascades service. Don't listen to the critics who say it's an either/or situation. We can and must invest in our rail infrastructure both in the short term, and with #HighSpeedRail for the long term!

Here's some good context about the winners and (temporarily) losers of the big #HighSpeedRail grants that were announced this week. The projects in California and Nevada were the biggest winners (because they're already under construction or ready to go) but it's nice to see that #CascadiaRail is one of only four new HSR routes added to the pipeline for additional study.

Over the past day I've seen a bunch of news about federal #HighSpeedRail grants, but no official announcement from the DOT yet.
So far I've seen:
* $3B for #California #HSR
* $3B for #BrightlineWest (#LasVegas to LA)
* $1B for #Raleigh NC to #Richmond VAAnd some other corridors got funding to study future #Amtrak service: https://www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews/news-wire/north-carolina-ohio-corridors-lead-list-of-those-receiving-fra-grants-for-possible-new-amtrak-routes/
But I haven't seen anything announced for #AmtrakCascades or #CascadiaRail. Did the #PNW get left out?

A new research report by the #UniversityOfWashington recommends that a successful #HighSpeedRail project needs "sustained community engagement" during the planning process, and emphasizes that "for commuters to prioritize rail transportation over air or other non-environmental ways of travel," speed and convenience can't be compromised.
