I am not safe in Kentucky nor with my toxic roommate as a disabled trans woman. I need $1650 to break my lease. I don't know if I'll even be able to afford rent next month. I also need to figure out who I can crash with while I figure things out.

Hi, these are the weekly #washingtonstate #kingcounty (that is, #seattle and environs) #COVID #COVID19 #wastewater toots.
A quick reminder that this King County respiratory disease data comes from Washington State, not the federal government.
Last week I highlighted really terrible SARS-CoV2 concentration numbers from the West Point (WSPT) sewage treatment plant's 7 day running average for 8/25, but said, maybe this is a crazy outlier, let's see next week's numbers. Well, they're in, and the updated numbers are quite, quite bad. These calculations of the 7DRA were done on 8/30 and 9/1, and they are by far the worst numbers we've seen in a year (which is as far back as the dataset goes). :( :( :(
WSPT is one of three King County(-ish) sewersheds in this dataset. You can find overviews, individual sewershed results, and a breakdown of variants for the state wastewater surveillance program, along with other metrics like case counts and hospitalizations for Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses, at https://doh.wa.gov/data-and-statistical-reports/diseases-and-chronic-conditions/communicable-disease-surveillance-data/respiratory-illness-data-dashboard#WasteWater. If you go to the page and click "learn more" in the statewide view tab, you can find out lots of details about how these data are calculated and how to interpret them. The dashboard gets updated every Wednesday (generally). The Department of Health is here on the fediweb, at @WADeptHealth

Hi, these are the weekly #washingtonstate #kingcounty (that is, #seattle and environs) #COVID #COVID19 #wastewater toots.
A quick reminder that this King County respiratory disease data comes from Washington State, not the federal government.
The West Point (WSPT) sewage treatment plant's 7 day running average is, well, sucky. The last 7DRA calculation was on 8/25. The only thing I can say about this is that this running average was just bouncing around, but then completely busted out in the two days from 8/23 to 8/25. It will be good to get some more data points next week to tell us if this is some super crazy outlier or not.
Also, you might notice the banner above the graph that says: "The CDC updated how it measures wastewater viral activity level (WVAL) in August 2026. Our dashboard currently uses the previous method while we work to incorporate these new updates." WVALs are the CDC categories used to describe very high/high/moderate/low/very low virus detection levels, and they get a fair amount of criticism because the category recalculations result in changing baselines that obscure year-over-year trends. I believe these WVAL categories get used in the state's "Statewide view" tab, so the CDC changes will affect that. By contrast, the facility-level graphs that I post each week are linearly-scaled graphs of seven day running averages of detected concentration levels. Whatever happens with the WVAL category definitions, it won't affect this facility-level reporting.

A friend of mine was scared today by a scammer pretending to be with the local Sheriff's dept claiming he had a warrant for her arrest over failing to show for jury duty and she'd go to jail if she didn't immediately pay him $3k.*
It's apparently a very common scam in Seattle right now.
The King County Sheriff's office is very clear they do NOT demand payments over the phone.
Also, Failure to Appear for Jury Duty is a misdemeanor in WA and will never carry a threat of incarceration. It involves a fine payable only at the courthouse.**
*She realized it was a scam in time to not hand over financial data, thankfully. But was still worried about "But what is there IS a warrant..." There is not.
** Which isn't to say you shouldn't observe your jury summons as the only penalty is financial. You should. It's fundamental to society and one of the few parts of the US government that seems to still be functioning.

We did! We got a LOT more than forecast, too. I think the last Wunderground forecast I saw was 4.3mm and we got 4.3 times that lol

Greetings, these are the weekly #washingtonstate #kingcounty (that is, #seattle and environs) #COVID #COVID19 #wastewater toots.
A quick reminder that this King County respiratory disease data comes from Washington State, not the federal government.
The West Point (WSPT) sewage treatment plant's 7 day running average climbed up some more from last week's numbers. The last 7DRA calculation was on 8/18. PS, it looks like the data for the ~ six week outage early this summer got backfilled for all three sites.

A quick reminder that this King County respiratory disease data comes from Washington State, not the federal government.

Time to remind all #Seattle and #KingCounty book lovers that the two library systems have a reciprocity agreement and you can check out books from *both* libraries if you live in either service area!
In addition, both SPL and KCLS have reciprocity agreements with other regional libraries, including Sno-Isle, Tacoma, and many more.

If you are in WA but outside of the Seattle Library's area, they also offer a 1-year paid membership.

Beyond The 100-Year Flood - Probabilistic Flood Hazard Assessment For King And Pierce Counties Under Future Climate Scenarios
--
https://doi.org/10.5194/nhess-26-3231-2026 <-- shared #openacess paper
--
[part of my old stomping ground as an engineering geologist]
H/T @Kees Nederhoff
“Flood maps are usually built from a single design storm. For King and Pierce Counties in the Pacific Northwest (USA), [the authors] tried the opposite - simulate 82 years of actual coastal and river conditions (plus 18 synthetic years) with SFINCS and let the statistics fall out cell by cell. That took about 5,400 yearly simulations and 194,000 CPU hours on USGS's Hovenweep HPC. Worth it!
The design-event shortcut turns out to hide a real hazard. A deterministic 10-year event underestimated flood depths by up to half a meter compared to the continuous runs.
The bigger surprise [to the authors] was how one-sided the climate signal is. One metre of sea level rise takes King County's expected annual flooded area from 161 --> 787 hectares, almost a factor of five. Changes in storminess over the same horizon barely register. And somewhere between 100 and 150 cm of SLR, land that never floods today starts flooding fast. If you plan adaptation in Puget Sound, that threshold matters more than any single return-period map.
[They] also propose Expected Annual Flooded Area (EAFA) as a probability-weighted alternative to the binary "inside or outside the 100-year zone" label…”

Though the weekly #washingtonstate #kingcounty (that is, #seattle and environs) #COVID #COVID19 #wastewater sampling has apparently resumed this week, there's a note up on the dashboard saying that the reporting won't start until July 22nd. That's about six weeks of no wastewater data on respiratory pathogens for the entire state, welp. I'm very disappointed.

Hello, The National Weather Service has issued a FLOOD WATCH for portions of northwest Washington, including all of King County, that will be in effect Wednesday afternoon through Friday afternoon. Flooding caused by excessive rainfall and heavy snow levels/snowmelt runoff may be possible, resulting in the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Residents of flood-prone areas, or who transit these areas, should monitor forecasts, prepare for further Flood Warnings, and prepare to take action should flooding develop.
Thank you, Kevin Lowery

The issue with the 61st Ave connection to Burke-Gilman that it's _very_ steep. Fixing it is on Kenmore's agenda, with funding tied to Sound Transit 3's RapidRide construction starting this year. (See https://www.kenmorewa.gov/our-city/projects/current-projects/sr-522-west-segment-b-improvements-57th-to-61st-avenues for a light overview.) But obviously, that doesn't help for this closure.
King County could suspend parking on 175th and use that for a walking detour, but there's no paved connection from that section of parking to 61st Ave NE, and setting up a temporary barriered area in the road would create a dangerous two-way single-traffic-lane next to a park popular with children.
So. Closure. Plan accordingly.

Burke-Gilman is going to be closed for up to five days in Kenmore between 61st Ave NE and 65th Ave NE starting February 16th. It's probably hillside reinforcement.
People on bikes can detour onto 175th, which runs in parallel. It's low-traffic, but what traffic is there includes heavy industrial from the cement plant.
Since there are no sidewalks on 175th - at all - people on foot are advised to go uphill to Bothell Way. Despite some business driveways, that length of sidewalk is perfectly reasonable, and next to a bus lane rather than full traffic. However, the climb up from 61st is very steep and is _NOT_ ADA-compliant.

As a former #PollWorker, it is fascinating that #KingCounty #Seattle does their elections (or at least tomorrow’s primary?) 100% by mail-in ballots and ballot boxes. I was hoping to volunteer as a worker for some future election again - clearly it’ll have to be in another capacity!
Shout-out to #AlleghenyCounty + #Pittsburgh for helping me catch the civic-duty bug! I miss the old polling place where I worked several elections that was LITERALLY THE GARAGE OF A DUDE’S HOUSE.
