@djsumdog true, there is the #CommonsClause, and the use of the #PeerProductionLicense on software, both of which are motivated by similar concerns to the NC license, but I would argue they have very different implications (I know

Applying the #PeerProduction license to software is another example of what Stephen refers to as "hybrid" licensing models, which like the Commons Clause only segment and divide the software commons, and IMHO, do more harm than good.

@xj9 @bhaugen the internet, #PeerProduction, and code forges broke Gates' experiment in commodifying software. There a relatively small handful of people (mostly corporate zombies) who don't get that, and are trying to hold onto the Gates model. Most people have just got on with building billable services around the deployment of software (customization, hosting, update management etc).

In the 90s it seemed obvious to me we had to transform the rest of the economy along the lines of the free software/network model (Commons-based #PeerProduction as #YochaiBenkler calls it). Because if you can produce public good resources like Indymedia or Wikipedia or Couchsurfing without using "the firm" (a bounded hierarchy with a fulltime paid workforce), why not everything else? What does "the firm" really do except privatize benefits and distribute costs?

@clacke that was my first reaction too. But then I have to remind myself that I have the privilege of more than 20 years of mistakes and mentorship to draw on. Unless one happens to know someone who is already active in our social space, it's still hard to learn about #SoftwareFreedom, managing #PeerProduction and #FederatedNetworks well, using #PlatformCooperatives and decison-making platforms (eg #Loomio) to avoid hierarchy creeping in etc. Let alone find existing projects in a given domain.
