  1. Governments - both conservative and liberal - have spent decades passing anti-worker policies and failing to enforce any remaining ones meant to support workers' rights. If these gig economy digital Sweatshop's are ...

    @wildsown
    > to be exposed, outlawed, and punished

    ... the only way to do it is through large-scale union organising, using tactics that hurt predatory gig platforms, not workers. Including helping workers join and establish platform coops.

    Well, another recycled one really, this one a couple of times now. It was originally published on the archived CoActivate version of the Disintermedia blog, then reposted on the Bridge Seat Co-op. It's the final repost in a series of 5 posts related to Bridge Seat (see links).

  6. Itch-scratching Free Code projects are like desire paths in the software space;

    news.wisc.edu/desire-paths-the

    Until software freedom movements can build a robust solidarity economy about 'paving the desire paths' - with responsive UX design, easy hosting options, etc - Free Code projects will continue to be unpaid prototyping for proprietary software companies. In many cases (eg iOS/BSB, Android/Linux) using our own work under pushover licenses against us!

  7. "It means platforms need to talk to one another, understand how each other’s technologies work, and find ways for actors who are not always used to collaborating to actually figure things out together. As you mentioned, the music industry and music distribution world often follow a startup ethos: get money, get users, grow big. This is the pattern we’d like to break from."

    💯%. I presume you're familiar with the Platform Cooperative Consortium, as this is exactly their mission. But I'll share a link to their case study collection for anyone who isn't;

  12. #Cooperative #Idea: Entrepreneurship Insurance

    Theory: People need to feel a sense of stability in order to take the leap out of the exploitation economy into the empowerment economy.

    Solution: Something like unemployment insurance but specifically for cooperative entrepreneurship. Pay people a stipend to write a business plan and find capital, and then require a certain amount of % of profit or revenue to pay back into an entrepreneurship insurance fund.

    I truly believe that this is the only way to protect Open Collective’s mission so we decided to make it happen!"

  14. Tech workers are not replaceable modules. Starting a solidarity economic company means building it around the skills, knowledge and interests of the tech workers who are keen to participate. When transitioning an existing company to being a platform co-op, it can be a struggle to attract tech workers who are keen *and* want to work within the company's established ways of operating. A serious organisational refactor can be required with staff changes.

  19. Imagine a platform cooperative (see: platform.coop/about/vision-and) owned by the businesses that use it, sharing the costs of a single online payment gateway (I worked on a website project that needed one, they're not trivial). Imagine they're hosting Free Code software, which might be maintained in concert with other cooperatives doing similar work.

  21. I just published the last Bridge Seat Co-op blog post of the year, on understanding fediverse servers as a form of hospitality, and how we see our role within that;

  22. I just published the inaugural post on the SubStack for the Bridge Seat Cooperative!

    bridgeseat.substack.com/p/comi

    It gives a brief intro to our values and our vision, and the approach we're taking to setting up a platform cooperative for hosting fediverse servers.

    > what it would take to host my own server and try entice some of the south Island punks over

    Ooh, ooh, a perfect chance for a shameless plug!

    If you want to hand off all the hassle of hosting providers and software updates, and focus on community facilitation, Bridge Seat Cooperative will be offering fediverse servers as-a-service. With onshore or budget options. I'm hoping we'll have a cut-price beta service up and running in a couple of months.

  24. One of my first steps in the process of establishing Bridge St hosting co-op will be to set up a newsletter on SubStack. Our newsletter will offer timely and accurate news on the evolution of the fediverse and other user-respecting, decentralised tech, and all articles will be free to read. But anyone who values the service, and can afford to give us a paid subscription, will be helping to fund the bootstrapping of the co-op.

  25. @takloufer
    > Being commercially irrelevant is the only defense

    What about having other sustainable revenue models? Platform cooperatives, social enterprises etc. Maybe web 1.0 got corporatized because donation-based services run by unpaid hobbyists can't keep up with platforms using VC money to pay fulltime salaries to staff?

  26. If we want to mainstream decentralized online services, we need ways to separate the work of running a service node (eg a fediverse instance) from running the hosting infrastructure ("the server"). The founders of Sandstorm were on the right track. Maybe what they were missing was platform co-op structures to run the underlying hosting and make sure they at least cover their upstream costs?

    #CommunityHosting #PlatformCooperatives #Sandstorm

  27. I doubt I'm the first person to mention this here, but it's finally happened; Goggle has imposed a storage quota of 15GB on gratis accounts. So one of the biggest advantages of using their services without paying - eternal, unlimited storage - is now toast. Could FarceBook be next? I wonder if this might be an opportunity for platform cooperatives to pitch modestly-priced services as a replacement for both?

  28. "Platform cooperatives are a tool for creating quality jobs on a large scale and they are already a reality! At a time when the concentration of big tech companies is through the roof, this course is not limited to generating an analysis and vigilance of capitalism. It prepares people for success as platform entrepreneurs in the exponentially growing ecosystem that is the gig economy."

  29. @self intriguing thoughts, thanks for taking the time to share them. I think the dynamics of swarms and crowdfunding are what they are. I see #PlatformCooperatives like #Stocksy or #SocialEnterprises like #Scoop.co.nz as the most realistic way of creating a secure living for those whose creative and intellectual work contributes to the commons. It requires building organisations, instead of just trying to get passing swarms into a hive ;)

  30. "There are some really urgent needs. For example, figuring out an investment fund for #PlatformCooperatives, which is so sorely needed. One of our fellows is thinking this through for her report."

  31. @Wolf480pl see my earlier posts about #Section230. If the host is liable, they can't take the risk of allowing (public-facing) user-generated content on their platform. You could make those rules apply only to commercial businesses, not community-hosting. But what about #PlatformCooperatives? Are they businesses or communities? What about #SocialEnterprises? Do we want legal risk preventing them from running user-generated content hosts?
    @RandomDamage

  32. @clacke that was my first reaction too. But then I have to remind myself that I have the privilege of more than 20 years of mistakes and mentorship to draw on. Unless one happens to know someone who is already active in our social space, it's still hard to learn about #SoftwareFreedom, managing #PeerProduction and #FederatedNetworks well, using #PlatformCooperatives and decison-making platforms (eg #Loomio) to avoid hierarchy creeping in etc. Let alone find existing projects in a given domain.

  33. CW: XMPP-ocalypse

    @jcbrand so it appears to me that there is a missing element in the ecosystem; customers. People who are willing to pay a regular subscription/ membership so that secure jobs can be created for people to maintain ethical services. If enough #PlatformCooperatives were offering great chat UX on top of XMPP, that would help funnel funds and resources into improving all the stuff we've been bemoaning. This is the kind of stuff I want to facilitate through #OpenAppEcosystem group
