  1. Putting this out there now that we've got a few months of rooftop solar under our belts: Seems well known that south-facing panels are always most productive. But if you need overflow (maybe south face too small) and obstructions aren't an issue, I'd prioritize west panels over east. We had one sales bro say E vs S vs W = not much difference over time. We don't have E panels but our W panels are more productive than some of our S ones (minor/brief tree shade on a corner)

However, given we have "on peak" surcharge on electricity used 4-8 PM, those kWh are worth more to me than morning (east) or daytime, especially in summer.

  5. "New Zealand's installed rooftop solar capacity reached 573 megawatts by the end of 2024."

    theconversation.com/nz-parties

Well that's good news. For comparison, the maximum output of a fully operational battlestation ... er ... Huntly Power Station is 953 MW. So our solar yield isn't yet enough to replace a single thermal power plant. But, there's a lot of disused roof space in Aotearoa, and solar panels are getting better and *cheaper* with every generation.

  11. Woof! This electricity month is shaping up to be a real bummer.

We started off producing poorly due to a lot of cloudy days. Then, very high usage w/ high temps/nonstop AC, bringing the kitchen online, unplanned car charging..

I expected that with the longer days we'd be drowning in kWh. Not the case. Presently sitting at 66% offset.

Not complaining. Grateful to have solar. Just surprised, and sharing observations.

  15. We haven’t had a “perfect solar” day since May 24. We’ve only had the system a few months so not sure what’s actually normal but that feels like a long stretch as we’ve had a bunch earlier on.

I define a “perfect solar day” as one resulting in a bell-ish shaped curve with no cuts, except for the annoying buzzcut we take at peak because our panels can push more than microinverters can handle. In the morning we get a small bit of shade which can’t be avoided. Neighbors. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Examples attached.

  19. We have solar panels with a net-metering + time of use plan. The way our utility works is that they charge a flat fee per *net* kWh (this makes sense) and then give a per kWh credit for super off peak (fee+credit=cheaper) and an extra charge per each peak kWh.

Interestingly, these past few bills we've received a super off peak credit for more kWh than we've actually used from the grid. I guess their systems aren't intelligent enough to care for that. So we are, in a very small way, (so far max $3/month) profiting off of this.

Example: At the end of the month the power they sent me, minus the power I sent them is 200 kWh. But my super off peak usage is 400 kWh. I get to pocket the super off peak credit for all 400, even though I only netted 200. Now, if only I could game the system like a tech/finance bro...

But it was rooftop PV that had the biggest impact, reaching a new Q1 high of 4,090 MW this quarter, and increasing its share to 15.8 per cent of total supply and remaining the single largest renewable contributor. AEMO notes that it is suppressing coal and gas generation during the day

  27. Happy #EarthDay!

While our family thinks a lot about climate change and find so many things going on so difficult to fight against, one of the things I'm happy to have done this past year is completely electrify our home, which suffers Canadian winters, where most rely on methane to heat their homes and/or their hot water.

It was part of our "OK, we've moved in to this new (to us) place and we're making some changes we've been wanting to do for quite some time" craziness we went through last year, with the end result being swapping out the house's gas stove, furnace and hot water tank (induction stoves completely kick ass, a hybrid heat pump hot water tank is pretty cool, and a modern heat pump + electric backup furnace has been great so far).

And the 13KW solar setup we put on the roof should hopefully generate all the electricity we'll need in a year (using BC Hydro as the battery presently) - we'll know in the coming months.

While these things feel like baby steps, I take them as pretty cool wins personally. Just wish I could do more about the corrupt dinkos ruining North America.

This coming year I'm hoping we can find ways to cut down on the plastics coming in to the house. We recycle every little last bit of it that we can, but we're aware of just how little that actually means.

Consuming less helps, but where it's hard to consume less like at the grocery store, it seems each month there's something new that's got some new plastic packaging covering a thing that previously was in something better.

    Stuff to work on.

  29. Ooooh. Now, that I've convinced the Domestic Department of Internal Affairs (DDIA) of roof top solar to be a good idea, this site doesn't work any more:

    solarpower.cer.auckland.ac.nz/

Any suggestions on what other resources for input on planning/decision making would be suitable?

I'd think we'd start with a set of panels up front, and in future years add battery storage later on (to make it more manageable from a financial perspective).
