The Eldora ski area #ExitToCommunity is happening.

Your #ExitToCommunity of the day is Eldora ski resort, in the process of being bought by the town of Nederland. Good for the sellers, good for the workers, good for the town.
Still early in the season tho:)

Another thing I'd like to see is a legal protection for Exit to Community. The workers of a supermarket ought to have the legal right to form a co-op and purchase their workplace from its owner. Ideally, customers would get the second option on doing this, although it would be more difficult for them to identify and organise with each other.

Commissioner Hester Peirce now talking at the National Press Club on a kind of #exittocommunity trajectory for tokenized projects—from centralized disclosure to decentralized control.

Last comment on this for 2024. I note that although other Matrix-based commercial hosts are now funding a lot more of the Matrix Foundation costs, the @element company still plays a outsized role in the development of the Matrix protocol. Especially on the funding side.
So I'd be interested to see a blog post from @matthew and the team on what they see their exit from VC looking like.

This talk looks like it'll be very good

"We have always been committed to supporting ... the long tail of collectives that are using #OpenCollective to make an impact in the world. In 2022 we began exploring what an ‘exit to community’ would look like, placing the future of Open Collective in the hands of those who depend on it.
I truly believe that this is the only way to protect Open Collective’s mission so we decided to make it happen!"
#PiaMancini, 2024
Legends!

The #exittocommunity of @opencollective to a user-governed nonprofit is big news for those of us who rely on it, including #Socialcoop members.
-
@ntnsndr given the Google monopoly ruling, and the possibility that their payments to Mozilla will dry up, I wonder if there has been any talk of Mozillla trying an #ExitToCommunity? Maybe it's too big to even think about, but how cool would it be to use a web browser maintained by a #coop?
-
I have often blamed venture capital for the problems of tech. But what if the exits VCs were after were #exittocommunity? Could VC be redeemed? Let's go upstream to the source.

It's out! On KGNU radio in Colorado and as a podcast, my interview with Anjali and James Young, founders of Collab.Land—on their #ExittoCommunity into a token-enabled co-op: https://lookslikenew.net/podcast/how-do-you-give-a-technology-to-its-community/

Do you have term sheets or bylaws conducive to #ExittoCommunity? We're interested in creating a library to help accelerate experimentation. Let me know if you can contribute.
-
As Reddit goes public, remember that so much of its success comes from the extent to which it enabled #GovernableSpaces among its users.
Why another IPO and not an #exittocommunity? See the library of examples at https://e2c.how/library

This database of community-owned software/service initiatives (spanning from Defector to a solar coop) is thought-provoking in a good way.
Given post-GReader/Evernote/etc. declining elite trust in VC-backed startups, I wonder if there's a funding-time playbook for (p)re-building trust through planned "in case of failure, break glass". #ExitToCommunity #e2c @daspitzberg

@heif The model made sense. Meetup gets revenue from its users. It is in the business of communities. A co-op model, accountable to fee-paying members, made perfect sense.
But of course potential investors just didn't know how that would work. It isn't done. There isn't policy infrastructure for that kind of conversion, that kind of #exittocommunity. Meetup got bought by an investment fund.

This post from @pettter has me wondering if there are any efforts yet to start to think about what a similar #coop run service might look like?

It seems like Bandcamp is past the startup stage where it could #ExitToCommunity?
https://www.colorado.edu/lab/medlab/2020/08/31/exit-community-community-primerAs much as I personally align with decentralization, there does seem to be some value in a centralized platform for managing payments, storage and discovery for artists whose livelihood depends on trust.

As I pay my $50 subscription fee to pobox.com I'm daydreaming about what it would've looked like if the users formed a co-op to run it instead of selling to Fastmail:

At present, most of our commercial newsrooms are owned by foreign media empires like the Australian #NineEntertainment, which owns most of our newspapers via its holding in #Stuff.co.nz, or shadowy "#PrivateEquity" companies like #OaktreeCapital who control a number of #NZ TV channels via its ownership in #Mediaworks. Many of these companies are looking to sell some or all of their NZ media "assets" because they're not particularly profitable. Could they #ExitToCommunity as #Scoop.co.nz did?

#ExittoCommunity: A New Option for Startups? #E2C

#NathanSchneider is talking about the #BuyTwitter campaign and how it came out of an existing #PlatformCooperative movement. #SharingEconomy corporations tried to convince regulators to share ownership with their users, as tech companies have done with workers, but #DemocraticManagement? Exit options, acquisition or IPO. What about an #ExitToCommunity option.
