  1. I just found this thread savaging Yoko Ogawa's "The Memory Police" and her writing in general, and I am quite flabbergasted.

To my mind she is one of the best writers I've read, and yet the first comment is "Issue 1: bad writing. The writing gave me the impression of someone writing their first story. It's simplistic, and not in an artistic way".
Maybe someone else can comment on the quality of the translation (I assume it will be excellent as Stephen Snyder is very experienced), but the Japanese is, as the translator remarked, extraordinarily beautiful.

  2. I am reading the short story collection "The Sea" by Yoko Ogawa. I've just read the story "The truck with the little chicks" (ひよこトラック) and I am once again in awe. I really wished I could write like her. With simple words but evocative, rich and subtle at the same time. I have read "The housekeeper and the professor" and "The memory police" and I loved both of them, but these short stories demonstrate her abilities even more.

Incidentally, if anyone has an English translation copy of "The memory police" handy and wouldn't mind looking something up for me, I would be grateful (I only have the Japanese version).

  4. Christ, look at the time! I should be asleep, but I've been "one more chapter"ing this book (The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa) for the past hour.

It's weird as hell, but incredibly compelling. Still a bit to go, but I'm already more than willing to recommend it to fans of strange speculative fiction.

  5. The latest novel in translation from one of Japan's most eclectic writers leans toward magical realism while reveling in the minutiae of an affluent family's life. japantimes.co.jp/culture/2024/ #culture #books #yokoogawa #stephensnyder #japaneseliterature

  6. Book 32: “The Memory Police” by #YokoOgawa.

Kept waiting for the central allegory to explain itself: things disappear on an island, then the memories of them, all enforced by the titular authority. Felt similar to Miéville’s “The City and The City” but fuzzier. There’s no logic to what disappears—birds, stamps, green beans, roses—and people give them up with no resistance. Seeing how the banning of books and critical race theory played out, I think I get it now.

  7. I love Japanese literature. Finished #TheMemoryPolice by #YokoOgawa a few weeks ago.

I don't know whether it's just about totalitarianism, or whether it's also a reflection of mental health issues following a toxic relationship, where you forget about parts of yourself too, but it doesn't really matter. This story can be enjoyed on many levels.
