  1. Two Japanese translated books in this year's long list, Under the Eye of the Big Bird by Hiromi Kawakami (tr. Asa Yoneda) and Hunchback by Saou Ichikawa (tr. Polly Barton).

  2. The author reimagines sexual reproduction, family ties and societal roles in a passionless world that is neither a dystopia nor an improvement on reality. japantimes.co.jp/culture/2024/ #culture #books #hiromikawakami #asayoneda

  3. A new (in English) Hiromi Kawakami book, one of my favourite authors. ❤️
The Third Love (三度目の恋), translated by Ted Goossen, is out today, and I had to go straight to our local bookshop and order it in! 😊

  4. Now that the short story has been published in a new translation by Ted Goossen, as "Mole" in 川上弘美 Hiromi Kawakami's new collection Dragon Palace, I thought I should finally finish the Japanese version (called 鼴鼠) that I've been reading (or more accurately, been trying to read) for the last 6 months - it's no more than about 25 pages long 😂.

There's a great sentence and a great new (to me) word I just read:
東京の空いっぱいを覆いつくす、猛々しい夕焼け。(A raging sunset that occupies the entire sky over Tokyo.)

猛々しい (たけだけしい) means raging or furious, and I love how it repeats the 猛 kanji, which by itself already means fierce, furious or wild, so 猛々しい is like rage or fury doubled 😁

  5. Ha, I just came across the footnote no. 7 in the short story 鼴鼠 (Mogera Wogura) by 川上弘美 (Hiromi Kawakami). I suffer from multiple levels of ignorance here - for a start I only knew that 朝顔 literally means morning face, rather than morning glory (the flower). And to go from that to urinal (because of the funnel shape of the flower)... 🤯

  6. Starting my first 川上弘美 Hiromi Kawakami short story in Japanese, 鼴鼠 (called Mogera Wogura in English, although that's not a direct translation).
It's about 20 pages long, so I'll tell you what I think of it when I finish it in about a year 😁
