AFAIK, there has still been no apology by the #WMF executive for the abrupt May 2026 lay-offs of #WMF staff [2]. It's probably fair to summarise WMF executive statements about the lay-offs in this worker's words: "we (WMF) consider the abrupt lay-offs as the appropriate use of management tools".

Since a kid, I always loved encyclopediæ. So #Wikipedia is one of my favorite project (my account's first contribution dates back from 2006!). Libre Knowledge! Wouhou! 🤓
While I've been reading these news for a few months (and did sign the two May petitions for #WWU by the way), it really feels like witnessing in real time the downfall of a wonderful project. This is so sad. 😢

The thing that really gets me with the Wikimedia Foundation's response to their staff wanting a union: Imagine you're charged with running the world's biggest free knowledge resource, which is only possible because of an army of nerds who love nothing more than fact-checking.
And then decide to bullshit that very crowd of people.

Active Wikipedians can sign willingness to do an editorial strike [1], if requested to by WWU.
There's also a petition (effectively) requesting the #WMF Board of Trustees to instruct the CEO to voluntarily recognise #WWU [2], and a more generic solidarity with @wwu petition at [3].

It appears that several WMF managers have failed to abide by Wikimedia values: the behaviour described in [1] would not be tolerated on a Wikimedia wiki. Anyone behaving that way would be asked to cease their disruptive behaviour, and if unwilling or unable to cease, would be blocked or banned.@wwu
