  1. Yesterday I added the page about Juliette to the Web Archive by hand.

Now her story stays there even if the domain goes, or the hosting, or me, or whoever renews it after me.

My son will be able to open it and read it in any of the three languages. The photos got archived too, and that is the part that matters to me most.

For anyone who did not know, and I did not know until this week, you can archive any page and keep it there through - web.archive.org/save

It pulls the images, walks through everything and makes a full copy. At least it looks right on mine.

Long life to the Internet Archive!

  2. I have a ton of old obsolete random CD-ROMs 'round here from the past four decades or so

everything from random magazine disks to obsolete local computer programs to phone books from 1994 to obscure video games

Most of them I can't find online. Would it be worth it to rip and preserve them somehow or somewhere, and if so, how is the best way to do it? Are there any real legal risks I'd take with this?

  3. I am kind of concerned about the state of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. My own personal anecdotal evidence is that it's at least once per week broken for 10 - 30 minutes.

Just right now, again, "502 Bad Gateway".

I do donate to them regulary and I hope that they'll get their Web Appication Firewall tuned good enough to defend against botnets (including LLMs), but still not impede usabilty.

  4. It might seem easy if you don't want to host your own stuff anymore to just redirect any request to the #WebArchive overview by prepending web.archive.org/web/*/ in front of the URL.

But #TheWaybackMachine also archives and follows these redirects… And yes, that leads to URLs like web.archive.org/web/2024102705 🤯

    Commentary (#WebArchive URL): web.archive.org/web/2026052022

The #InternationalCourtOfJustice «opinion issued last summer exceeded the expectations of #climate advocates, with the court ruling it was "unlawful" for countries to neglect their climate commitments, opening the door to "reparations" for affected countries.

    [...]

However, the creation of an "International Register of Damage" to compile evidence of "damage, loss or injury attributable to #ClimateChange" vanished from the adopted text»

  7. Restricting access to trusted archives like the #WaybackMachine can produce unintended consequences that surface later 🤔

In PRESERVING THE WEB IN THE AGE OF AI 📰 Mike Masnick warns that limiting good-faith preservation tools weaken the systems needed to maintain an accessible historical record.

  12. Na Internetu víc než kde jinde platí ono známé "Littera scripta manet". Že se něco smaže, neznamená, že to neexistuje. Třeba takový Web Archive si pamatuje dlouho a dobře. Jo, například tady: web.archive.org/web/2023030100

  15. @internetarchive
I was in my late teens and early 20s when Disney was doing this... It confused me because of all the redirecting and I actually remember thinking that it could be dangerous... I wondered who go.com was and why I ended up there. Had no inkling that domain redirection (misdirection?) would become the privacy and security nightmare it is today.

  16. ☀️ Summer online in the late 90s? Disney hoped you’d start at Go․com.

It launched in 1998 as a bold web portal strategy to unify Disney’s online presence—ESPN, ABC, Disney—all under one digital roof. But starting in 2001, it was gradually stripped of services & branding. Now it's just directs to a page about the Disney Company.
