The epidemic of ad-dense content mill sites that's been gunking up the internet with crap years was bad. Has me going to hand selected sites and Wikipedia. The AI generated content is only at best as "good" but with orders of magnitude more volume so the signal to noise ratio of all social media, the web, etc. will probably get to completely unusable levels. I long ago quickly punted from content mill site. I get the first hint of LLM regurgitated garbage and I do the same. These bots will fill up social networks, probably even the fediverse too. Outside the fediverse the less monetization and conversion the harder the vulture capitalists will push us, just as they have with ads to the point of requiring ad blockers. But at that point we will be blocking the whole web. The questions I have are: how will we find the real content, where will it be built and hosted, how will the creators be able to make a living out of it when the big tech companies and vulture capitalists will try to strangle them out? #ai #rant #VultureCapitalism

Guardian: Cal-Maine’s profits more than tripled compared with the same quarter last year – and are nearly eight times as high as at the start of the bird flu outbreak in February 2022, according to financial results published on Tuesday. The company, which produces 20% of the eggs eaten in the US, made $1bn in windfall income in the first three-quarters of the financial year – the profits extracted after accounting for production, processing and transport costs.
On Tuesday, Cal-Maine said that its sales almost doubled to $1.42bn in the fiscal third quarter, which ended on 1 March, primarily down to raising egg prices, which has hurt consumers who rely on the once affordable protein source. But the company’s shares then fell by more than 4% after acknowledging that it was being investigated by the justice department’s anti-trust division. Mississippi-based Cal-Maine said it received notice of the investigation into egg price increases last month and that it was cooperating with the investigation.

Hard to believe how bad MEC has gotten. Some prices are triple what they used to be, for notably worse quality equipment!
And though some staff are friendly now, the repair/service desk used to be welcoming and useful. Zippers were never a problem to get repaired, and so on. Now? 0/10, would not interact with again. Not just unhelpful, but insulting.
Any advice for outdoors equipment in the Lower Mainland, when second-hand sources aren't panning out? Lee Valley?
Online-only retailers are not suitable this time.

You mentioned "philanthropic organizations" that would be help better than my description of a grant - but can you name some philanthropic organizations ? ❓
Grant doesn't seem like a good free lunch either they really do give it almost blindly / without terms and conditions (?)... that's why I'd like an example.

By the way, #Greyhound could be headed in the same direction, as it was purchased and the land underneath the many downtown stations was sold out from under the company. Unlike Europe, Greyhound doesn't operate in other transit stations, it needed those Greyhound stations to operate, and the company is in serious trouble.
