The Black Wolf by Louise Penny
Normally Louise Penny’s books come out in the fall and for some reason I usually save them until the first of the year to read. This year I saved it and forgot to read it in January. I did purchase the other book she released that was co-written this year. I will add it to my links later in this post. I hope to get that one read before the end of this year so I am ready for her next Gamache novel in January 2027.
The Grey Wolf came out in 2024 while this one came out in 2025. I think Louise Penny had too much to say about this storyline so divided it into two books.
In this book, Gamache and his team investigates after the death of a scientist in the last book left too many questions. An assistant to the antagonist in the last book disappeared and in this book his body is found on the same island where the scientist had died.
Gamache is convinced that a devastating terrorist attack is about to happen involving the United States and Canada.
As his team discovers each clue it brings them closer to knowing what the threat is and who the Black Wolf is as well. It involves climate change and the horrific wildfires Canada has been dealing with. It also discusses the United States lack of water and somehow as the story unfolds it makes sense.
The team spend part of their time in Three Pines and the rest going to both an island on a lake in Canada and also traveling to Europe and Washington DC.
The Canadians don’t trust Gamache and it appears that they are dealing with a crazy conservative party in Canada much like we are in the U.S.
I was surprised to see that Nicole is now part of Gamache’s team, and I did like that she was treated better than she had been in earlier books. It felt like she is maybe going to be an active member of his team along with Lacoste and Jean Guy.
There were a few other characters that I think you will be surprised to see in this book. I won’t spoil it for you by telling you who they are. Read the book and be surprised.
The story felt a little too real for me. I can’t say I enjoyed it as much as I have other Louise Penny books in the past. I enjoyed the scenes that took place in Three Pines because that is my happy place. I had a hard time finishing this one because I struggle enough with what is happening in my world as it is right now.
I don’t enjoy the books that deal more with politics. Again, because we can’t escape it in real life and I would choose to escape it in my books.
I enjoy the books that are centered more around Three Pines and involve the locals a little more.
I did enjoy this one only because time spent in Three Pines is always good.
I own copies of all her books in this series and will continue to purchase them in the future. Louise Penny is one of my favorite authors.
If you enjoy this series, just know that this one is fueled with politics and try to read around that to enjoy the rest of the story.

I will be honest, Still Life is my least favorite book but if you want to start reading this series, I recommend reading them in order. It introduces you to Three Pines and the characters better if you start from the beginning.

I did enjoy a little bookish adventure today. I attended an author event at an indie bookstore. The author is Eliza Jabore who wrote Back Stabbers. I can’t say much about it because I wrote the time wrong on my calendar and arrived an hour late. I did get to see the last half hour, and I did purchase the book. I always purchase the books. I can tell you that this is a horror novel and I can’t wait to read it.

I know it’s copaganda, but I really wish Three Pines had been greenlit for Season Two.
Alfred Molina plus a large cast of indigenous actors? And a MMIW plot line?

I was really hoping the TV adaptation of Louise Penny's Three Pines series would be bilingual (or maybe even multilingual, if First Nations languages were featured), with subtitles for different audiences. Frustratingly, the English version does have bits of French dialog - subtitled - but just bits. Like Gabri and Olivier will exchange words in French, or Gamache and Jean-Guy will go into French for line or two. If the producers understand people can read 1/2 >

#ThreePines - based on the #MurderMystery series by #LouisePenny, a surprisingly compassionate & ethical #InspectorGamache of the Canadian Surete visits the small village of Three Pines to solve a murder. He becomes enmeshed in the villager's lives as he battles police corruption. Casting for Gamache was excellent but only superficial attention is paid to the eclectic villagers & Three Pines itself. Have any of you indulged in #ThreePines on amazon? it’s like a campy Canadian crime drama but also hits hard on super serious Indigenous issues. I tend to love Canadian series and it doesn’t disappoint. not saying it’s perfect, but worth watching if you’re into international murder mysteries
