Out of curiosity I checked out the Goodreads review of my mother's first book of poetry* "Vapour Trails", published in 2000 just before her death. I was pleased to see such positive comments on it.

Readers of Louise Penny's books will be familiar with some lines from the book as they are given to the character poet Ruth Zardo.

It has been reprinted (2024) and is being sold from Brome Lake Books in Canada. I have several copies here and tried to offer them to local libraries but there was so much red tape for them to be able to accept such a donation that I gave up trying.

What has made me reject LP has been her stealing Shakespeare quotes as if they were her ideas. And the borrowing/buying of the poetry.

The first few books were nice, but fell into discord. It finalized with the horrific novel written with Hilary Clinton. I would be embarassed to be associated with that book.

2025 – mein Jahr in Büchern

Kennt ihr das Gefühl, wenn ihr am Ende eines Jahres zurückblickt und merkt, dass ihr eigentlich viel mehr gelesen habt als euch bewusst war? So geht es mir gerade. Ich habe diese Woche mal mein Bookwyrm-Profil durchgeschaut und festgestellt: 61 Bücher habe ich dieses Jahr beendet. Plus zehn, die ich abgebrochen habe. Und nochmal 52, die auf meiner „To Read“-Liste stehen und darauf warten, dass ich endlich Zeit finde.

61 Bücher. Das klingt nach viel, aber wenn ich ehrlich bin, dann war das Lesen dieses Jahr für mich vor allem eins: ein Weg, Kanada zu verstehen und da ist meine Neugier zur Zeit noch grenzenlos.

Der Canadiana-Rabbit-Hole

Als wir nach Toronto gezogen sind, wurde mir schnell klar, wie wenig ich eigentlich über diesen Kontinent weiß. Über seine Geschichte, über die Menschen, die hier leben, über die Geschichten, die dieses Land geprägt haben. Also habe ich angefangen zu lesen. Und dann wurde daraus ein Projekt.

Ich habe eine eigene „Canadiana“-Liste angelegt und inzwischen stehen da über 20 Bücher drauf. Bücher über Toronto, über die First Nations, über die Hudson Bay Company, über die Underground Railroad. Bücher, die mir helfen zu verstehen, wo ich jetzt lebe.

Toronto von Allan Gerald Levine war so ein Buch. 300 Jahre Geschichte dieser Stadt, erzählt durch Geschichten und Persönlichkeiten. Ich habe es geliebt. Oder The Massey Murder von Charlotte Gray – ein Verbrechen, das viel mehr erzählt als nur eine Tat. Über Frauen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, über den Einfluss des Ersten Weltkriegs auf Kanada, über die britische Kolonialgesellschaft. Ein Buch, das mich wirklich gepackt hat.

Und dann war da The Inconvenient Indian von Thomas King. Man, ich hatte keine Ahnung! Dieses Buch hat mir die Augen geöffnet für die komplexe Geschichte der Beziehung zwischen First Nations, Native Americans und allen anderen, die auf diesem Kontinent leben. Es war verstörend, aber auch unglaublich fesselnd.

Das vielleicht bewegendste Leseerlebnis hatte ich aber mit Stories from the Magic Canoe of Wa’xaid von Cecil Paul. Ich habe es gelesen, während wir eine Woche im Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia verbracht haben. Auf einem Boot, während die Landschaft, über die er schreibt, am Fenster vorbeizog. Cecil Paul war das letzte Mitglied einer einst stolzen Nation, und seine Geschichten – voller Kampf, voller uralter Weisheit, voller persönlicher Erfahrungen – haben mich sprachlos zurückgelassen. Es ist ein kurzes Buch, aber es bleibt.

Die Louise-Penny-Paradoxie

Irgendwie komisch: Ich habe sieben Bücher aus Louise Pennys Inspector-Gamache-Reihe gelesen, obwohl ich bei fast jedem Buch irgendwas zu meckern hatte. Die Morde sind manchmal zu viel, die Fälle nicht immer logisch, manche Charaktere verhalten sich auf eine Weise, die ich einfach nicht glauben kann.

Aber ich lese diese Bücher auch nicht für die Morde. Sie sind einfach der Haken, um den Louise Penny ihre Geschichten baut. Was mich wirklich fesselt, ist, wie sie ihre Charaktere beschreibt und die weisen, fast poetischen Beobachtungen, die sie durch sie teilt. Und ich liebe es, wie viel ich über Kanada lerne, während ich diese Bücher lese. Eine Prise Geschichte hier, ein bisschen kulturelle Besonderheiten dort. Es ist eine sehr genussvolle Art, das Land, in dem ich jetzt bin, ein bisschen besser zu verstehen. Louise schreibt einfach richtig gut, da sehe ich dann auch gerne darüber hinweg, eigentlich kein Krimileser zu sein.

A Rule Against Murder war da besonders schön. Fast poetisch, und der Mord war eigentlich nur Dekoration. Bury Your Dead spielt in Quebec City und hat mir viel über die Geschichte Quebecs beigebracht. Mein Favorit in der Reihe bisher.

Was fünf Sterne verdient

Ich bin eigentlich ziemlich großzügig mit fünf Sternen. Aber wenn ein Buch fünf Sterne bekommt, dann hat es meistens eines von drei Dingen getan: Es hat meine Art zu denken verändert, es hat mich emotional tief berührt, oder es hat mir eine Geschichte erzählt, die ich nicht vergessen werde.

Being You von Anil Seth hat meine Art zu denken verändert. Über Bewusstsein, über die Philosophie und Wissenschaft dahinter. Ich habe irgendwann aufgehört zu zählen, wie viele neue Ideen und frische Perspektiven er eingeführt hat.

East of Eden von Steinbeck war einfach eines der besten Bücher, die ich je gelesen habe. Ein Page-Turner mit Tiefe. Ich war versucht, direkt nochmal von vorne anzufangen, als ich fertig war. Die Geschichte zweier Familien, kunstvoll verwoben mit komplexen Ideen über generationenübergreifende Schuld, freien Willen, Beziehungen und moralische Ambivalenz. Steinbeck schreibt so schöne Prosa, dass ich Zitat um Zitat notieren wollte.

Und dann war da Of Mice and Men. Ich habe geweint. Überraschend, wie kurz das Buch war, und es hatte mich von der ersten Seite an. Die Geschichte ist geradlinig und es dauert nicht lange, bis man das Ende kommen sieht. Was ich nicht erwartet hatte, waren die Tränen in meinen Augen am Ende.

Nuclear War von Annie Jacobsen war faszinierend, aber auch zutiefst erschreckend. Diese minütliche Beschreibung dessen, was bei einer nuklearen Eskalation passieren würde, kombiniert mit tief recherchierten Fakten über die nukleare Kriegsmaschinerie, hat mich verwirrt und zutiefst verängstigt zurückgelassen. Allein die Erkenntnis, dass jedes der 14 nuklear bewaffneten U-Boote der USA mehr als 20 Mal die explosive Kraft aller Bomben des Zweiten Weltkriegs trägt – inklusive der beiden Atombomben in Japan – sollte klar machen, wie bizarr das System ist, das wir geschaffen haben.

Wenn es nicht passt, dann passt es nicht

Ich breche Bücher schnell ab. Wenn etwas nicht funktioniert, dann lasse ich es liegen. Zehn Bücher habe ich dieses Jahr nicht zu Ende gelesen. Heart of Darkness nach drei Tagen. Project Hail Mary nach zwei. Lolita nach 50 Seiten – „Amazing prose, disgusting story“ stand in meiner Notiz. Ich konnte einfach nicht im Kopf des Hauptcharakters sein.

Don’t Let Him In von Lisa Jewell habe ich abgebrochen, weil ich mich gefragt habe, ob es vielleicht von einer KI produziert wurde. Die Prosa war eine endlose Parade von Klischees und so uninspiriert, dass ich wirklich einen Moment lang gezweifelt habe.

Manchmal weiß man einfach: Das ist nichts für mich. Und dann ist es okay, aufzuhören.

„20 Seiten hätten gereicht“

Ich habe eine spezifische Frustration mit Sachbüchern, die sich selbst aufblähen. The Anxious Generation von Jonathan Haidt? „20 Seiten hätten gereicht, da die Kernthese wirklich leicht zu erfassen ist.“ Singularity Is Nearer von Ray Kurzweil? „Hätte eigentlich nur ein Kapitel sein können.“ Predictably Irrational? „Etwa 30 Prozent zu lang.“

Ich mag Dichte. Ich mag Bücher, die auf den Punkt kommen. Die besten Sachbücher, die ich dieses Jahr gelesen habe, waren erzählerisch getrieben – wie The Massey Murder oder I’ve Got a Home in Glory Land – und nicht thesengetrieben.

Lesen als Ort-Machen

Am Ende ist das Lesen dieses Jahr für mich vor allem eins gewesen: ein Weg, hier anzukommen. Ein Weg, Kanada zu verstehen. Ein Weg, zu verstehen, wo ich jetzt lebe und warum die Dinge hier so sind, wie sie sind.

„The more I know about it, the more I love it here“ – das habe ich über Toronto geschrieben. Und das stimmt. Je mehr ich lese, je mehr ich verstehe, desto mehr fühle ich mich hier zu Hause.

Die kanadische Verfassung zum Beispiel. The Canadian Constitution von Adam Dodek hat mir gezeigt, dass jede Verfassung eine Zeile hat, die die Natur des Landes, das sie regiert, treffend definiert. Die deutsche Verfassung ruft die Unantastbarkeit der Menschenwürde auf. Die Amerikaner schätzen „life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness“. Und Kanada schätzt „Peace, Order, and Good Governance“. Um ehrlich zu sein, ich denke, da ist etwas zutiefst Wahres und Schönes dran.

Was kommt als nächstes?

Auf meiner „To Read“-Liste stehen noch ein paar Bücher, auf die ich mich wirklich freue. Octavia Butlers Parable-Reihe zum Beispiel. Oder Slaughterhouse-Five von Vonnegut. War and Peace wartet auch noch. Und Middlemarch. Und Great Expectations.

Ich habe auch entdeckt, dass ich manchmal „cozy“ brauche. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches war ein bisschen seicht und leicht vorhersehbar, aber auch sehr gemütlich und liebenswert. Nach all den Büchern über Atomkrieg, KI-Doom, indigenes Trauma und Hannah Arendt war das genau das Richtige.

61 Bücher. Zehn abgebrochen. 52 auf der Warteliste. Und unendlich viele Geschichten, die noch darauf warten, entdeckt zu werden.

Nicht nur Schreiben sondern auch Lesen ist für mich wie Denken und damit eine Reise zu mir selbst. Und dieses Jahr war es auch ein Weg nach Hause.

Noisy Neighbours

Recently, Canada’s quiet existence has been disturbed by a new noisy neighbour. We have always been friendly and cooperative with the people next door, but now there are new people on the block and things have become a little testy. There have been loud protestations about where the property lines are and who owns what, and Canadians are shaking their heads.

The new American president’s repeated suggestions that the United States might claim Canada as its 51st state have not been well-received here. At first we could brush it off as a bad joke or tease, but as the days progressed the suggestion felt more threatening. Our leaders are preparing for counter-measures against proposed tariffs and asking us not to buy goods made in the USA. Some of my neighbours are changing vacation plans so as not to spend time and money there, and we are all keeping a cautious eye on the news.

This has caused me to analyze my loyalties because I love Canada but I also have family that I love in the United States. My family comes first, of course, but I also want to support whatever Canada does to maintain national unity.

As I was mulling this over, my attention was drawn to a section of a novel I was listening to and it all suddenly took on a new light. This is my transcription from the audiobook of The Grey Wolf, by Louise Penny:

“As the float plane banked and headed south to Montreal, Armand forced himself to look down at the vast, seemingly endless stretches of forests and water, and once again thanked God that his children and grandchildren lived in Quebec where the resources, while increasingly vulnerable, were still plentiful.

Canada might not be the most powerful nation on earth, but power was shifting from weapons to resources. And Canada was resource rich, which was shifting the balance of power. Where once the population had been dismissed as hewers of wood and drawers of water, servile and menial, now in this climate of change that description turned out to be a very good thing.

Canada had plenty of wood to hew and fresh water to draw, to drink. They just had to do a much better job of protecting it. What was that quote the abbot had said as he had hidden Langeloise’ map? “In a dry and parched land where there is no water …” There were more and more of those lands, those nations suffering terrible droughts, and while climate change had hit Canada, especially in the form of terrible wildfires, it had been felt less forcefully than in most other areas. Even in the nation to the south, once green and fertile land had become dry and parched. Rolling rivers had withered to a trickle. Times were becoming desperate; people were becoming desperate.”

Of course! These lightly-veiled threats from the south are not about land ownership so much as they are about access to resources. Trees and water are obviously abundant here, but less obvious are the rare minerals that the world now needs to keep our computers, cars, and spaceships working.

Power is shifting from weapons, which the United States has in abundance, to resources, which Canada has. Now that I see the president’s very public taunts in this light, it all makes a lot more sense. I still don’t like it, but I think I get it.

I gave away my last first edition of Vapour Trails today (apart from my own dedicated signed copy). Now we wait for the shipment of the new edition. She was an avid #LouisePenny fan, who came to buy a box from Steven. She has bought other pieces from him in the past. I know she'll love it.

Book 11: “A Trick of the Light” by #LouisePenny.

This mystery series is starting to feel predictable, which can be a comfort and largely why I read one every winter. But I’m tired of the bitchy exchanges with Ruth (they’re not even funny or endearing), the constant need to refer to Myrna by her size and Blackness … The addiction angle in this one was shallow, but at least there’s developments with Jean-Guy, Clara, and Peter.

I went through the first five of these last summer like you did in your story: inhaled them!

I would not call any of the Inspector Gamache books "cozy". They plumb the depths of humanity in a way that leaves you wondering how we've survived as a species. Yet I love them all.
