Presumably ovipositing, otherwise I don't understand the curious dance this colourful fly was doing. Quite the display given its wing and body colours and patterns.

Still a few minibeasts about: Issus coleoapterus (nymph), an unidentified springtail, a Trioza (most likely T. remota), and a tephritid fly (possibly Tephritis vespertina). I see these, and a couple of others, nearly every day. The triozid and the fly were both covered in ice crystals on Sunday.

Another very common insect in my yard, some sort of Strauzia that feeds on Jerusalem artichoke during its larval stage. Not sure of species because several do this, plus several more that might be undescribed. They have beautiful eyes. #strauzia #FruitFly #tephritidae #helianthus #diptera #entomology #nature

One of my favorite finds from my June trip to Central Oregon was this cotton-gall Tephritid (Aciurina bigeloviae). http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/164849783A Tephritid, with a rather large and chunky ovipositor and all black body and wings except for whitish inner tips that give them the look of a cape or cloak.
