A poor little tephritid fly with crumpled wings. He crawled onto my hand and hung around a while. He couldn't fly, so I tucked him into what I thought would be a safe place outside.

Presumably ovipositing, otherwise I don't understand the curious dance this colourful fly was doing. Quite the display given its wing and body colours and patterns.

Still a few minibeasts about: Issus coleoapterus (nymph), an unidentified springtail, a Trioza (most likely T. remota), and a tephritid fly (possibly Tephritis vespertina). I see these, and a couple of others, nearly every day. The triozid and the fly were both covered in ice crystals on Sunday.

Today I saw this fly, more specifically: The tephritid fly Chaetostomella cylindrica.
It lays its eggs in the flower-heads of Asteraceae, most commonly Centaurea spp., in which the larvae also develop.Tephritid flies are among my favourite flies, because of the markings on their wings and their often colourful eyes.

Another very common insect in my yard, some sort of Strauzia that feeds on Jerusalem artichoke during its larval stage. Not sure of species because several do this, plus several more that might be undescribed. They have beautiful eyes. #strauzia #FruitFly #tephritidae #helianthus #diptera #entomology #nature

I love the colour of the eyes of this small tephritid fly (Chaetorellia sp., about 4 mm). The females have an ovipositor which they use to make a hole in plants and lay their eggs.

One of my favorite finds from my June trip to Central Oregon was this cotton-gall Tephritid (Aciurina bigeloviae). I'd noticed their white, hairy galls on rubber rabbitbrush for years but never knew the gallmaker was so beautiful. #tephritidae #fly #diptera #oregon #nature #entomology #galls #rabbitbrush #FruitFly

A rare, rare fly: Katonaia hemileopsis
http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/164849783A Tephritid, with a rather large and chunky ovipositor and all black body and wings except for whitish inner tips that give them the look of a cape or cloak.
Many thanks to black67 for the ID. All I could tell was its family.
