  9. Issus coleoptratus (Fabricius, 1781)

    Published under #CC0 here flic.kr/p/2qUWnCw

At last, spring is here and so is my first macro shot of the year 🥳
I've tried a new lens configuration (100mm macro + Raynox DCR250) but I'm not convinced, the depth of field is way too shallow.
Also tried a new 7W ring light, pretty happy with it (need a new USB powerbank, though).

  13. Still a few minibeasts about: Issus coleoapterus (nymph), an unidentified springtail, a Trioza (most likely T. remota), and a tephritid fly (possibly Tephritis vespertina). I see these, and a couple of others, nearly every day. The triozid and the fly were both covered in ice crystals on Sunday.

  18. This year, my most commonly observed species was the spotted #Lanternfly (#Lycorma delicatula, #Fulgoridae), an introduced #PlantHopper (#Fulgoroidea, #Hemiptera). Spreading rapidly since its 2015 introduction in #Pennsylvania, it's now the 3rd most commonly observed #Insect in #NYC on #iNaturalist.

The red blobs are antennae, the black eyes just above those.

  20. A planthopper nymph, Issus coleoptratus. The bottlebrush filaments protruding from its bum are waxy excretions from its diet of plant sugars and starches, and their form, which varies from species to species, is used as an aid to identification. I blogged about this tiny invert here:

  21. Here are some photographs of my favorite lepidopteran, the #planthopper parasite #moth (Fulgoraecia exigua). As the name suggests, it parasitizes planthoppers, with newly-emerged caterpillars tracking down hosts to attach to (I would love to see that), then sucking hemolymph until they are ready to pupate. They then unlatch and descend to nearby trees (or whatever; they don't care) via a silk thread. Also notable is its bizarre cocoon that looks like the Sydney Opera House. In my area (Pennsylvania, USA), these cocoons can be found on the trunks of almost every tree if you spend enough time looking. I.e., this moth is extremely common. Sadly, I've yet to find an attached #caterpillar but here's a link to some great pics on @inaturalist: inaturalist.org/observations/7.

Also of note, now found in Canada: journal.lib.uoguelph.ca/index..
