  1. Sometimes a moth is more than it seems.

I looked twice at this moth photo I was uploading to #iNaturalist. There was an orange spot on one wing. A parasitic mite?

    No! It's a globular springtail!

I'm not sure if it hitched a ride into the moth light on this moth or came in on another insect.

  2. flipped a rotting stick in the woods the other day, found tiny metallic springtails (likely _Lepidocyrtus_) feeding on the fungi.

  3. And just as I got home I saw a snout mite (family Bdellidae) feeding on a springtail on a patch of lichen, and had to go in and get my light and clip-on lenses to get a proper photo.

  4. Cet animal *existe* et ça s’appelle un collembole. Ces trucs sont vraiment étranges, minuscules et assez communs.

Je vous conseille « Planète collembole » un magnifique documentaire à leur sujet, dispo sur arte en ce moment !

  5. Old photo but now with a completely different ID, Ptenothrix renateae, thanks to some kind people on iNaturalist. I read through the 1985 description of this species and am guessing it's the dorsal pattern that gives it away. #springtail #collembola #inaturalist #macro inaturalist.org/observations/8

  6. I almost forgot it was #MiteMonday! From under one of my reliable dead logs just a few days ago, a mesostig with its prey, a tiny white springtail; a slug for scale; and a smaller, paler mesostig crossing paths with another springtail (which it did not try to eat).

  7. #MiteMonday: wintertime rock flipping turned up some penthaleids and those iridescent purple springtails, not quite sure what they are. They were about the same size (see third photo).

  12. #FridayFlyDay
A very tiny woodpecker fly eating a very, very tiny springtail. Woodpecker flies (genus Medetera) get their name because of their upright, woodpecker-like stance. They are predators of soft-bodied arthropods such as this springtail (#collembola).

  13. I was blown away by this very unusual white-pigmented morph of a familiar giant springtail species (H. spinosa), which I found recently under a log in a tree fern forest in Kaikōura, Aotearoa.

These springtails normally have either yellow or orange coloured spines, so this was a very special little sproinglet indeed!

  17. In New Zealand, the invertebrate life is mostly nocturnal, so for macrophotography it's best to go out with your camera at night.

I'm from the UK, so a bit wary of going into the forest after dark, but I'm slowly getting used to it here (while still taking safety precautions of course). It's absolutely worth it - you see so many more creatures and can get amazing behaviour shots like this springtail feeding on fungi!

  21. Nearby, a springtail – Entomobrya intermedia.

Minute yet omnipresent: when there's nothing, there's very likely a springtail about somewhere nearby. These animals are hexapods but not insects; a sister group.

  24. #SpringtailSaturday: Currently on every leaf you can find little golden-yellow globular springtails (family Bourletiellidae) milling about and dancing. It's just as cute and magical as it sounds.
