Here's a short movie I made last month of a NZ giant springtail in action. Well, about as much action as I think giant springtails can muster. Watch it slowly walk about!
One of our undergraduates, Mieke, found it under a rotting log in the Nina Valley forest on one of our ecology field trips. Mieke was (successfully!) channelling her inner Frank Ashwood (@frankashwood) since Frank couldn't be with us on that trip.
Giant springtails are always a treat to find. NZ forests contain a few species of these wee charmers. This one's *Holacanthella duospinosa*.

I was flipping rocks today and came across more of the bright red springtails. I think they were under 90% of my landscape rocks today. I took these at higher magnification, and to my surprise, I seemed to get great depth of field. These guys are so tiny, but I took these at over 5x. There were a couple of the even tinier translucent white entomobryiods but I didn't really capture them. They actually spring!

Field work half-time for #BEN_EAF! ⛰️
We took small and larger soil samples from whom hashtag#SoilFauna will be heat-extracted in the soil lab at the Aberdeen campus of the #JamesHuttonInstitute. This is mainly springtails (#Collembola), mites (#Acari), and hopeful more small critters!
Further, we did also collect the soil fauna from the pitfall traps: mainly ground beetles (#Carabidae), wolf spiders (#Lycosidae), and harvestmen (#Phalangiidae). 🕷️🪲

Borrowing a flash head from a friend and made a simple and compact bounce diffuser. I like a lot of the results from today, but not amazing for shiny stuff. I'm a bit envious of some of the macro photographers that are happy with a diffuser they bought off the internet.
The tiny little yellow globular springtails are out and dancing on the leaves! They lock antennae and twirl around and around. The smaller ones are the males and you will sometimes see multiple males trying to dance with a female. I have been trying to get a video that isn't too blurry/shaky.
Springtails are not insects; like insects they are six-legged arthropods, but they are on a separate branch of the arthropod "family tree". Sometimes a moth is more than it seems.
I looked twice at this moth photo I was uploading to #iNaturalist. There was an orange spot on one wing. A parasitic mite?
No! It's a globular springtail!
I'm not sure if it hitched a ride into the moth light on this moth or came in on another insect.

Yesterday we had earthworm cocoons, today I bring you springtail spermatophores!
Springtails, like many other soil invertebrates, reproduce by a male leaving these structures (a blob of sperm-rich fluid on a stalk), which the female will sniff out, collect and use to fertilise her eggs. Very romantic!

I almost forgot it was #MiteMonday! From under one of my reliable dead logs just a few days ago, a mesostig with its prey, a tiny white springtail; a slug for scale; and a smaller, paler mesostig crossing paths with another springtail (which it did not try to eat).
