Winzige Brackwespe (Körperlänge max. 3 mm), vermutlich Gattung Bracon, bei der Eiablage in eine Gänsedistelknospe, in der sich vermutlich Dunklere Gänsedistel-Bohrfliegen entwickeln. Vermutlich, weil diese Bohrfliegen in der letzten Woche andauernd paarweise dort zu sehen waren.
Brackwespen gehören zu den Schlupfwespenartigen. -

Die Fotos zeigen zwei Insektenarten, einmal einen todgeweihten Nesselrüssler (Phyllobius pomaceus), der als lebender Nahrungsvorrat diente. Und zum anderen die verpuppungsbereite Larve einer für mich nicht identifizierbaren Schlupfwespenart, die dabei ist, ihren von innen aufgefressenen, aber noch lebenden Wirt zu verlassen.

I'm a little surprised by this 1919 description of a parasitic #wasp (#Hymenoptera #Ichneumonidae), the only described species from #Australia in a genus that includes dozens of #species.
The opening #Latin section gives rich detail on coloration and markings. The #English section describes morphology but has nothing about coloration. I would have expected the Latin to document a subset of the English, not to be fully complementary.
Is this normal for some taxa?

Four (parasitic) #wasps (#Hymenoptera) from a SLAM #Malaise sample in #Canberra #Australia over the last three weeks. Natural areas everywhere are (or should be) full of beautiful #insects like these, all just going about their business.

I made many attempts to get a definitive image of this insect. This was the best of them.
It is an ichneumon, an elegant and extraordinary predator wasp. This female has an exceptionally long ovipositor, used for probing into holes and laying eggs to parasitise wasp or other larvae.
There are at least 2500 species in the UK but this one lacks any dramatic features which make identification straightforward. This would need to be mounted and examined under a microscope. I left it be.

15 years ago today I had my first and only encounter with an Ichneumonid Wasp. It was laying some eggs in this tree (which fell and totaled my car just over a month later, but that's probably not related!)
Creepy looking, but also fascinating.

Still struggling with the manual portrait lens for macro. On this occasion though it was really in its element.
I thought this was Pimpla rufipes but just at the end of the ovipositor there is a slight curve, like a rainwater shoe. So this is the nearly identical Apecthis compunctor. They are ichneumon wasps, parasitic on butterfly caterpillars.

In de insectenwereld doen ook vrouwtjes van sluipwespen aan "ik wil de grootste hebben."
(Er zijn een heleboel soorten die er zo uitzien en met het blote oog nauwelijks of niet van elkaar te onderscheiden zijn.)

The #iNaturalist fairy—by the hand of user ‘fonsv’–just delivered a precise species ID to an observation of mine of an #Ichneumonidae parasitoid wasp. A great match; mind these are hard to identify, primarily from the lack of available guides and accessible reference material. Mine is merely the 5th observation worldwide of this species.
