A finales de la década de 1970, la televisión abierta en los Estados Unidos estaba completamente dominada por tres grandes cadenas comerciales: ABC, CBS y NBC. Estos gigantes de la industria concentraban la información en bloques nocturnos muy rígidos de apenas 30 minutos de duración, bajo la firme creencia de que el público no tendría el más mínimo interés en sintonizar un espacio de noticias fuera de los horarios habituales de la comida o de la cena. El modelo parecía inamovible y nadie se atrevía a desafiar las estructuras tradicionales de la radiodifusión de la época.
La historia cambió por completo el 1 de junio de 1980, cuando el empresario y magnate de los medios de comunicación Ted Turner fundó Cable News Network, globalmente conocida por sus siglas como CNN, operando desde sus oficinas centrales en la ciudad de Atlanta, Georgia. El canal inició sus transmisiones regulares exactamente a las 18:00 horas con un equipo inicial de 300 empleados y una cobertura que apenas lograba llegar a 1,700,000 hogares que contaban con el sistema de televisión por cable. La primera nota informativa de la señal estuvo a cargo de los presentadores David Walker y Nischelle Turner, quienes reportaron en vivo el intento de asesinato del líder de los derechos civiles Vernon Jordan.
Para sostener una programación de 24 horas continuas sin caer en repeticiones absurdas, la emisora tuvo que romper esquemas invirtiendo masivamente en tecnología de satélites domésticos, lo que les permitió enlazar de inmediato corresponsalías internacionales en ciudades como Roma y Londres. Aunque los críticos apodaron burlonamente al proyecto como Chicken Noodle Network (Red de Sopa de Pollo) debido a su bajo presupuesto inicial, el canal demostró su verdadero valor periodístico en el siglo XX durante la cobertura en tiempo real de la Guerra del Golfo en 1991, cambiando para siempre el concepto de la inmediatez informativa y obligando al resto de los medios del planeta a imitar su modelo de transmisión ininterrumpida.
