  1. This photo brought to you by the thought "let's wade around in the river in my boots".

It was really slippery... Had to go very carefully.

    I love a good river.

  2. Many people enjoy getting out into nature. Including me, of course: I love a hike as much as the next guy.

But my idea of getting stuck in is certainly different to most. The muddier, the wetter, the swampier I can get, the better. I can't go past a pond, ditch or swamp without wondering how deep it is.

Occasionally I get to find out. This one? In places, I couldn't feel the bottom 😍

  3. A small, boggy area I found near Meldon Reservoir, Dartmoor.

I was with the family this visit, so sadly I couldn't leave the path and squelch out into the bog like I sorely wanted to. Its depth will forever be unknown.

  4. Looks can be deceiving:

I was out in the country, exploring areas off the trails like I often do, when I encountered this innocent-looking drainage ditch. The water calmly trickled past the reeds. Nobody was around.

It turned out to be a thigh deep swamp and I plunged in well over my wellies. Oops!

I didn't hurry to get out.

  5. You do see occasional reports in the news, or on TV programmes following the lifeboats, of people getting stuck in mud flats.

I always look at them and wonder how stuck they really are; sure, they weren't expecting to sink, and are unprepared - completely right they call for help.

But if I WANT to sink, if I EXPECT to get stuck, and given I'm not exactly unfamiliar with pulling myself out of thick mud, I always wonder if I'd be ok in their situation.

  6. Neighborhood chat alerted: a Gopher Tortoise was walking the pavement! I sprinted out to secure her, then a neighbor offered a 4-wheeler lift back to the wooded burrow ridge.

Official duties of the #HonkyTonkWitchPatrol are in full swing. 🐢✨

  7. On tonight's Countryfile there was a segment where Matt joined a couple of people surveying a mud flat.

They didn't sink very deep, but it's always a delight to see mud flats and muddy wellies on TV.

In all honesty I was a bit jealous. I don't have mud flats anywhere remotely nearby, and I'd love to go 'survey' one.

  8. There is little more calming than the sound of gently rippling water.

    A small river, southern UK.

Don't try to cross the bridge though, it was on the verge of falling down! But the river's only knee deep at this point, so it's fine to wade across, you'll just flood your wellies. Whether that puts you off depends very much on whether you like getting your toes squelchy : )

  9. For avoidance of doubt, yes, I did wade in much deeper than my wellies.

    It was wonderful!

  10. I discovered this beautiful little river this week. It's usually the preserve of the local angling club, if the signs is anything to go by, and the footpath isn't even marked on the map.

What a lovely quiet place it is.

The river was delightfully cool and, in places, navel-deep. What, you didn't expect me to use the footpath, did you? That wouldn't get me all wet and mucky, would it!

  11. This week, with a bit of time to myself, I have been overcome with #wanderlust

On Monday I explored open countryside, sinking into a muddy drainage ditch between fields and wading navel-deep in a little river.

On Tuesday I went to Dartmoor, sunk into a mossy bog and followed a stream up a hill.

Today I got deliciously stuck in a bottomless, stinky, woodland bog.

My glutes are wrecked, but it has been FANTASTIC.

  12. Ticked a swamp larking adventure off my bucket list today: Dartmoor bog.

I've wanted to play in one for years.

It was everything I hoped for: squelchy, mucky and devilishly deep.

Hard work getting through it though, repeatedly sinking up to my waist and hauling myself out. I'm exhausted!

One spot was so deep I couldn't feel the bottom.

    It was utterly wonderful.

Of course I've got loads of photos I'll be sharing here.

  13. Reeds growing alongside a swampy ditch, somewhere in Norfolk, UK.

I'd love to explore the wetlands here; splashing in the watery ditches and sinking into the mud flats. It's quite public though, so probably not a suitable place for swamp larking.

Also I'd probably upset the local birds who definitely wouldn't be expecting a guy in wellies to squelch past their nests.

  14. Essential equipment for any budding swamp lark: decent walking poles.

Telescopic ones don't last (believe me), no, for freeing yourself from a deep mire, these are what you want.

I use a pair of them that I can lay flat on the mud's surface and haul myself up like parallel bars in the gym. It makes tackling even bottomless bogs so much easier and has got me out of a pinch more than once.

Of course, if you're into getting really stuck, just leave the poles on dry land.

  15. Dawn in the swamps is a magical time. The various creatures that live in the swamp create a symphony of sound that travels across the water and add to the mystery before the light comes up.

  16. Spent a few days last week exploring Lake Verret, Louisiana, by kayak with a friend of mine. I was photographing the large cypress in the foreground, allowing my kayak to drift, when I came around the other side and saw this view, with an egret in the background framed by the Spanish moss. Such a peaceful scene.
