  1. Another #PeerReview done.

    Manuscript c4,000 words
    Review c2,700 words
    5hrs

Paper in a key area of my methodological work, so it was really interesting. But I really needed to get stuck in.

Two collaboration projects on the design and reporting of #RCTs that might be useful for others:

    pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/379825
presents 19 factors to aid trial design, and the DELTA2 Guidance specifying a target difference and reporting the #SampleSize calculation for RCTs
    trialsjournal.biomedcentral.co

    #StudyDesign

  2. Which #SampleSize to use in your pilot or feasibility trial?

Well, you won't find the answer in this review of studies in #ISRCTN (2013 to 2020)
    pilotfeasibilitystudies.biomed

But it is a good intro into the topic, and with 57% not reaching their target sample size, they may interestingly not provide the information they were designed to offer!

  3. A well-justified epistemological foundation is a key requirement for a #DelphiStudy:
    sciencedirect.com/science/arti

The team argues that #ReportingGuidelines encourage researchers to reflect on and disclose key assumptions and methodological choices in such studies.

  4. Co-developed at #DundeeUni and #SFU
"A Toolkit for Building a Collective of Older Adult Researchers"
    sfu.ca/starinstitute/about/ins
    (COAR)

"A practical resource for engaging older adults as active partners in community-based research"

    #Participatory #StudyDesign

  5. Mirjam Stieger (Lucerne Uni) and I are invited to present
"Contemporary #Evaluation of Interventions: Mobile, Digital, and Pragmatic"
    at @unibern
    bbs.unibe.ch/training/summer_c

This is the annual Summer Course of the Doctoral Program Brain and Behavioral Sciences, and comprises a mixture of keynotes, masterclasses, hidden curriculum etc.

I am very much looking forward to it, and also very honoured to be invited once again to Bern to train #ECRs!

  6. Tutorial paper illustrating how to develop planned contrasts (as an alternative to #PostHoc comparisons) in #Rstats, including empirical examples with reproducible data:
    journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/

    #StudyDesign #RCT

  7. One member of the FDA advisory committee, and non-voting, industry rep worked on Spravato for Jansen. Her colleague, a psychiatrist was MAPS-trained and works with ketamine currently. Let’s talk conflict of interests. What #psychiatricmedicines have been tested against the gold standard of cognitive behavioral therapy? Which of the providers in the #mdmaassistedtherapy trials or advisory meeting actually practice CBT? #studydesign #litreview #contactus

  8. Call for #GlobalHealth #GlobalMentalHealth researchers interested in #Multimorbidity:

9th GACD Funding Call – Management of Multiple Long-Term Conditions
    gacd.org/funding/current-call-
    🗓️ 15.05. (first stage)

The common call document [pdf gacd.org/perch/resources/admin] lists a range of topics such as #StudyDesign, health #equity, stakeholder engagement and knowledge sharing it has a specific section on #OutcomeMeasures that explicitly refers to our COSMOS work
    medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

    #CoreOutcomeSet

  9. I'll be offering an introduction to #simulation methods to determine #SampleSize-s for clustered / nested studies.

Apparently another popular session at #RMeF23 🙇

One of the classics that got me into this area is Ukoumunne's
    onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/ab

I was always interested in how to straddle the overlap between observational #TherapistEffect studies* and #RCTs in this area.

  10. One of the most problematic areas in the submission we get and papers I review are the sections on #SampleSize justifications.

See for example @lakens' excellent paper on the topic:
    psyarxiv.com/9d3yf/
It now comes with a process guide in a #ShinyApp, which is an excellent support:
    shiny.ieis.tue.nl/sample_size_
    #Rstats

    For #HRQL researchers:
    rdcu.be/dnfO4

And many people teach this stuff, e.g., ☺️
    researchgate.net/publication/3

  11. A #SysReview from the "#ResponseShift – in Sync Working Group" analysed 150 studies
    link.springer.com/article/10.1

Apart from the interest in the psychological phenomenon, the relative size of such effects compared to intervention effects (e.g., in #RCT link.springer.com/article/10.1) is very important for #StudyDesign in #HRQL research (see also doi.org/10.1007/s11136-023-033).

Therefore an interesting descriptive finding: it was possible only for 105 of these studies to calculate #EffectSize-s.

  12. @ncrav

While not expressing disagreement or agreement with the #study's #conclusions, the #experiment design included some features that make it difficult to #generalize from.

For example, they eliminated those homeless with a history of #substance #abuse. That by itself makes the #headline claims a bit suspect, or at least not clearly #supported by evidence.

  17. The "Reviewer's guide to #QuantitativeMethods" provides a concise summary of what to learn about and how to plan & report studies employing 31 (2nd ed. apparently 35) methods: routledge.com/The-Reviewers-Gu

Since it is a book, it will be difficult for many to get access. Does anyone know whether at least the checklists have been published somewhere #OpenAccess?

And is there a #QualitativeMethods version?
