  1. yeah, just got a notification that we @KAEEGoetheUni got a small grant to develop a tutorial session with a small research task: students will be tasked to identify elements of #HiddenCurriculum in our #STS study programme. It will be fun, and hopefully offering critical insight, to think about this between #HigherEducation studies and #ScienceAndTechnologyStudies.

  2. Does the byzantine nature of PhD applications count toward the #hiddencurriculum? I swear every place I look (program site, department site, university site) has subtly different instructions. I'm so confused...

  3. Website and free webinar on applying to grad school in ecology and evolution, with a focus on the "#HiddenCurriculum" students might not know. Please share!

    * How funding works
    * How to choose advisor
    * Mental health
    * PhD vs Masters
    * And more

    Please let me know suggestions, too

  5. 1/45) This is a re-post of a popular thread of mine from Twitter for students (or their advisors!) applying to Economics graduate degrees. I'll be focused on MA, but some of this is relevant for Ph.D.

    I initially wrote this thread after my first year on an MA applications committee when it became clear that there was a *lot* of hidden information harming people’s applications. Five years later that's still the case!

  6. Interesting. BF (not an academic but avid reader) is reading a book:
    - on a topic he is interested in
    - on a topic he is knowledgeable about
    - written by an academic
    - published by public-facing but semi-academic press

    His reaction: "I hate all the 'I propose' 'I argue' 'I will show.' Just do it."

    I don't disagree. They're part of the #HiddenCurriculum code to "proper" #AcademicWriting that I haven't cracked and get called out on by reviewers = #Jargon

  7. I joined the #AEA #CSWEP board! I'm the Newsletter Oversight Editor, and in that position will work to help reveal the "#HiddenCurriculum" and less obvious resources.

    For those who were unaware, all issues of the CSWEP Newsletter are available online: aeaweb.org/about-aea/committee

    Recent newsletter issues have discussed everything from navigating the (pre-doc era) PhD process, to getting research funding, to seminar culture.

  8. I was pretty down about the whole #dissertation proposal process though. Part of this was because everything seemed so unclear, even when I'd ask for guidelines. That lack of clarity also led to some critical #feedback.

    So I reflect on feedback in #gradschool (again). This post is more... reflection I needed to process & get off my chest. Hits on #HiddenCurriculum themes again & #MentalHealth in grad school/while #dissertating.

  9. I blog pretty inconsistently about #GradSchool. But recently I completed my #DissertationProposalDefense & that seemed worth a few posts. I wrote abt what the proposal defense was like (structure) for me.

    Experiences vary but I hope that honestly sharing my experiences = doing my part to dismantle the #HiddenCurriculum.

    At the very least this lets my family & friends know what in the world I'm doing in my #phd.

  10. Student ‘slave auctions’ illustrate the existence of a hidden culture of domination and subjugation in US schools

    “Reenacting a slave sale as a prank tells us that we have a great deal of work to do with our students so they can distinguish between intent and impact,” Osumi wrote. “They may have thought this skit was funny, but it is not; it is unacceptable and requires us to look honestly and deeply at issues of systemic racism.”

  11. What do you do if you end up with more data than can fit in your dissertation (or book or article)?

    My latest on how knowing which kind of story you're writing can help you figure out which pieces to publish first and what to do with the leftover bits.

  12. #Community is one of the major themes of our podcast. #Academia tries to silo us into buckets. The #HiddenCurriculum forces #poc #Indigenous #Black #women #firstgen #disabled scholars to compete with each other for scarce resources in the dark while making it feel like it’s our fault. We’ve benefited so much from a community of academic aunties and we hope you can too.

    All this to say, we’d love to rebuild our community of #marginalized scholars that we had at the bird site over here!

  13. For #oa week, I finally shared a teaching tool I’ve been using for years. It’s an #OER designed to unpack one of the #HiddenCurriculum skills we don’t talk about very much in #HigherEd: How to read –and maybe also how to write – #research reports: The #ResearchBurger 😂

    Handout and slides now archived #oa for all!
