The students’ story in the Jute quickly picked up by the Dundee Courier. The Courier has a tendency to side with management but is clearly being pushed by the students which is just brilliant for the future of journalism. Now we need an explanation as to why an institution which has shed over 800 staff in the past two and a half years was £30million in credit but still claiming there was a ‘crisis’ which made more compulsory redundancies necessary.

A very good piece of journalism by the student newspaper at the University of Dundee. Does not reflect well on the administration of the university at all. The redundancies are unnecessary and the organisation was not in ‘crisis’ when it asked #ScotGov for a bailout. No further funding will be forwarded to the University by the SFC.

Looks like three rounds of voluntary exit/redundancy wasn’t enough for #DundeeUni to reach their cut target, with compulsory redundancy looming and staff now on strike. Will a fourth round of voluntary work?

It might - this is dragging on so long some staff are that much closer to retirement age, paying off mortgage, children graduating, landing another post, etc. 📉

I hope #DundeeUni has explored transferring ownership and/or running of the Dundee Botanic Garden to the National Trust for Scotland, or the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh #RBGE which already runs four sites: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Botanic_Garden_Edinburgh

The petition to save the Dundee Botanic Garden & Cafe in relation to the #DundeeUni cuts has shared a FOI request reply. The uni claims the garden's finances are commercially sensitive as they explore options (maybe so), and claim not to know who owns the former cafe premises at the garden entrance?! Quote:

"The café ceased operating in 2024 and is no longer in use as a café. The University does not hold recorded information identifying the current owner of the premises referred to in your request.

During its existence, the café was run by an independent third-party tenant under a lease arrangement and was not operated by the University."

One small silver lining of the latest round of #DundeeUni jobs cuts: Union membership should see another boost #UCU #union

This is desperately sad news from #DundeeUni, and it’s simply awful for the languages, mathematics and philosophy students and staff at Dundee.

The university sector is under resourced and in bad shape across Scotland and the rest of the UK (scenes here are reminiscent of terrible waves of redundancies in Australian universities 10 to 20 years ago).

I am afraid that decisions like this—to suspend degrees in core academic disciplines—will not inspire confidence that those in management are doing what they can to value and protect the core mission of the university.

Contrast this week's #DundeeUni quote about suspending #Dundee #Mathematics degrees (previous toot) with this from the Campaign for Mathematical Sciences:

"Worryingly, many smaller maths degree programmes, mostly at universities that have lower entry requirements, have been shrinking and are under threat. Brighton University, Oxford Brookes University and Birkbeck College have already cancelled or scaled back their maths degree programmes. This creates a significant risk to both the diversity of the maths undergraduate population and the development of maths teacher talent. Indeed, research commissioned by the Council of Mathematical Sciences shows that graduates of these smaller maths departments with lower entry requirements are more likely to enter careers in education.

An action plan is needed to maintain a healthy ecosystem of maths degrees for the future, including strong and sustainable provision in every region."
