  2. 💡 Craft tip: Cut every “very.” Replace it with one vivid verb or image. Precision always beats padding.

  3. 🕯️ Craft tip: When revising, read your story backwards, paragraph by paragraph. You’ll catch echoes, patterns, and lazy sentences.

  4. 🧠 Craft tip: Don’t just describe settings, activate them. Make the wind whisper secrets, the floorboards remember names, the light tell time.

  5. 🎭 Tip: Conflict doesn’t always mean fighting. Sometimes it’s a smile hiding a secret.

  6. 💡 Tip: The best stories don’t tell emotions, they trigger them. Let readers feel before they understand.

  7. 💬 Tip: Read your dialogue out loud. If you stumble, so will your readers. Smooth it till it sings. 🎶

  8. 📚 Writing tip: Description isn’t about listing details. It’s about mood. A room can be “messy” or it can be “a battlefield of forgotten dreams.”

  9. 📌 Writing tip: Plotters, steal from pantsers. Pantsers, steal from plotters. Balance = the sweet spot where stories sing. 🎶

  10. 💡 Tip: Start scenes late and leave them early. Readers don’t need the small talk, drop them right into the fire.

  11. I feel like #Storycraft on #SecondWind is kind of underrated. This is a really interesting interview with the duo behind #BlackTabbyGames on creating interactive storylines that makes NPCs feel like real people and not just resources used in a puzzle:

cc #theLudarium but also kind of #theLibrary ?? (does IF / VN stuff belong there? I'd argue it should.)

  12. What makes an antagonist truly powerful?

It's not just brute force—it's vulnerability. Their pain. Their regret. Their why. 💥

Check out today’s #TonyTipsTuesdays post and discover why a villain who feels can be more threatening than one who doesn’t.

  13. New #WritingWithMirrors video!

This one is about when you're *trying* to find a mirroring — some interesting aspect of a character that you can home in on, something you can reflect in other characters — but you're just coming up empty.

  14. New video on #WritingWithMirrors!

There's a scene in GLASS ONION that explains the entire movie—and it's not one of Benoit Blanc's big reveals.

I do a deep dive into GLASS ONION's opening sequence,
which uses mirrors in four different ways at once.
    (Because if it didn't,
    the movie just wouldn't work.)

  15. New #WritingWithMirrors video!

Some mirrors you build from the ground up.
But work you've already done, plans you've already made, drafts you've already got, are just as full of mirrors ready to be used.

  16. New #WritingWithMirrors video 😁

A quick example, showing how to bounce off one character and come up with great mirror characters for them — or, figure out new mirrors between characters you've already got.

  17. New storycraft video: WRITING WITH MIRRORS!

This one is about the power of similarity and contrast.
It's how different parts of a story can reflect each other, echo each other, connect to each other.

For writers, readers, and anyone who loves thinking about how stories work.

  18. I've got to the end of the story I want to tell in this (my first) #novella, but I have more questions than answers about how to deliver the payoffs at the end. It's very much a first draft to throw away.

I've finished it feeling pleased with having written 30,000 words, and dismayed to discover how little I know about #storycraft. I have lots of notes for things I want to improve, and somewhat fewer ideas for how to achieve it.

Still! A finished draft! Sort of!

  19. @mkhardywrites I have a shelf full of reference books on #StoryCraft, and have taken numerous classes, but I'm an #ObligatePantser and this means using #scapple to figure out the story beats after I've already done the first draft. With longer work, I do this in chunks. #AmWriting

  20. I am finally, finally reading Stephen King's "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." It's a masterclass.

The story opens with a three-page intro from the narrator, the guy in prison "who can get stuff".
And in those three pages, tells SO MANY tiny, snippet-y stories. Which tell us all about what we're in for.

    Seriously. Read those three pages.
Count how many separate, individual stories you're being told.
    It's glorious.

  21. Lincoln Michel, on extraneous actions and stage directions—why authors use them, and why not to.

"I have a not-terribly-intellectual principle for my own fiction writing, which is that sentences should strive to do “double duty.” That is, they should function on at least two narrative levels."

    - Worldbuilding Games

also, I will join/found short story discussion clubs on sight, fyi
