One thing that's really nice about #smplayer is that it lets me run two subtitle tracks at once, so I can set the primary to English or German, and the secondary to Japanese.

@dff I love #SMPlayer and if that seems like too strong a word, I will omit entirely my feelings about #Clementine.

Some video players can directly play video if you feed them a youtube.com URL. I personally use MPV, but if you're scared of the command line, SMPlayer gives you a nice graphical program that can natively play YouTube videos (as well as videos from a bunch of other video sites).

These are some very good suggestions and although I am a #KDE user, I am going to take a look (sometimes in a new light) at your suggestions.

One suggestion I would like to add, similar to Aberole is good old #SMPlayer (https://www.smplayer.info)

For years the number one recommendation for media playing on Linux was VLC, which almost always comes with distros. I always seemed to have issues with it and didn't like it very much. Came across SMPlayer and I think it runs rings around VLC in every way!

Yesterday, I said I was impressed with #SMPlayer and today I am even more so.

Give #VLC a Bandcamp url and nothing happens. Give SMPlayer a #BandCamp URL and it plays every track on the page!

Again, wow!

Never thought I would say this...

Everybody usually talks about #vlc being pretty much the default media player on #Linux, but I found it didn't do a lot of things I wanted (like playing videos from YouTube or especially Internet Archive).

I have found that #SMPlayer works much, much better.

The default interface is ugly and I looked for themes and it took me a bit to figure things out. It is not totally intuitive but changing the icon set under the interface options is what really changes the look of the interface. I think Papyris Dark looks great.

#SMPlayer is a desktop video player that can play videos from youtube.com without needing to open a command line. Click 'Open', paste a URL form youtube.com¹, and it will play on the desktop.

¹I think it works with other video sites but I haven't tested it.

Part of the frustration with #ADHD is the constant hunt for new stimulus. For me, just when I get a comfortable workflow, I feel the need to tinker.

Right now, things are good with #Vivaldi, but I'm fighting the urge to get back on #Firefox. I played with #Elisa until I went back to #SMPlayer.

@omgubuntu #SMPlayer with #mpv, for subtitles capabilities like secondary track, seek video to previous/next subtitle shortcuts.

@itsfoss I've been using #VLC for a long time but about half a year ago I switched to #SMPlayer (#mpv GUI) which appears to be working quite a bit more efficiently (using less CPU power for decoding) and I like the user interface more

@Solus What is the reasoning behind #smplayer for #plasma instead of #mpv?

My new favorite way of playing YouTube videos is using the mpv player.

Example:

$ mpv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DJMl3NXqXg

For browsing and searching YouTube, SMPlayer with the smtube addon works very well. smtube automatically plays the videos on SMPlayer as well.

No ads, no tracking. Watch web videos as if they are on your computer.
