A quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson
Solitude is the climax of the negative virtues. When we go to bed after a solitary day we can tell ourselves that we have not been unkind nor dishonest nor untruthful; and the negative virtues are agreeable to that dangerous faculty we call the conscience. That they should ever be admitted for a part of virtue is what I cannot explain. I do not care two straws for all the nots.
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) Scottish essayist, novelist, poet
Essay (1880-01/02?), “Reflections and Remarks on Human Life,” § 4.6 “Solitude and Society”More about this quote: wist.info/stevenson-robert-lou…

A quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson
It is the business of this life to make excuses for others, but none for ourselves. We should be clearly persuaded of our own misconduct, for that is the part of knowledge in which we are most apt to be defective.

There is another kind of “glory”: conceiving too high an opinion of our worth. This is an undeserved feeling by which we value ourselves, and that makes us think ourselves different than we are, just as the passion of love lends beauties and graces to the object it embraces and makes those smitten by it — with their judgment blurred and altered — find what they love different, and more perfect, than it is.

A quotation from Marcus Aurelius
Do not forget you are like the rest of the world, and faulty yourself in a great many instances: that though you may forbear from some errors, it is not for want of inclination, and that nothing but cowardice, vanity, or some such base principle hinders you from sinning.

The man who underestimates himself is perpetually being surprised by success, whereas the man who overestimates himself is just as often surprised by failure. The Cantril Self-Anchoring Striving Scale reveals insights into how people perceive their lives.
Those rating life at 7 or higher are thriving, while those at 4 or below are considered suffering.

#NaomiKlein’s #Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World is a polymathic work that serves up new #political heuristics with the firepower we’ve come to expect from the coiner of “disaster #capitalism.” A Dante-spiral through our circles of cultural hell, it’s also a memoir of #demoralization, #selfevaluation, and persistent hope.

Every year where I work, we fill out #SelfEvaluation forms rating ourselves in all the standard areas from below expectations to exceeds and whatever. I generally try to rate myself as meets, though I do like to think that I exceed in some areas.
It's not like our raises depend on these things. (They don't, because we don't really get them.... Sigh) This year I decided to look through more of the "auto type" fill out options - and if I really were honest with myself, I have always rated myself too low.
Evidently my manager(s) think the same as well. Had the "go over the performance eval" meeting today, and while - again - it has no current bearing on pay, it's a strong assist should we ever actually get merit pay..... Because I'm an #ExceedsExpectations at my job!
There is nothing more satisfying than being told by your manager that they can definitely tell when you're out, and miss having you there.
#today was a good day.

Really struggling with the work self evaluation this time around. Honestly, my mental health hasn't been the greatest. I've kept on top of work ok, but I'm swinging wildly between "I suck, I've made a million small mistakes" and "I did what I was supposed to do and it was decent work and I didn't cry and honestly I feel like that exceeds expectations these days leave me alone." Somehow, neither of these feel appropriate to put down for HR.
Self evaluation really feels like a particular torture when your mental health is not the most stable. It's hard for this not to send me into a spiral of self loathing that I'm pretty sure isn't accurate, but I don't know what actually IS accurate, and of course I'm motivated to make my work sound as good as possible while not being embarrassingly unrealistic, and I don't understand what HR finds valuable about this exercise.
