  1. Uncurl, or: Unanswered

    A Sijo

    I plant my unanswered questions
    hoping spring knows what to do;
    yearning tendrils spread outward
    straining to find some purchase;
    crisp, green vowels uncurl softly
    beside bright consonant foliage

    W3 poetry prompt

    For Sally’s W3 prompt last week, she invites us to explore what lies beneath the surface—whether in gardens, nature, or ourselves—through the images of soil, roots, weeds, and hidden growth.

    My above sijo was inspired by this limerick I wrote for a d’Verse community prompt back in 2021:

    Crisp, or: Fresh

    I sow d'Verse prompts in my garden
    But I feel that I must beg your pardon.
    For my rows are of keys
    That yield green abc's
    Though my gardenin's really quite ardent.

    Sijo?

    A Korean verse form related to haiku and tanka and comprised of three lines of 14-16 syllables each, for a total of 44-46 syllables. Each line contains a pause near the middle, similar to a caesura, though the break need not be metrical. The first half of the line contains six to nine syllables; the second half should contain no fewer than five. Originally intended as songs, sijo can treat romantic, metaphysical, or spiritual themes. Whatever the subject, the first line introduces an idea or story, the second supplies a “turn,” and the third provides closure. Modern sijo are sometimes printed in six lines.

    When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

    Ben Harper (b. 1969)

  2. Relieving song, or: Rising steam

    A Sijo

    my pot begins to murmur
    beneath its plain, faithful cap;
    every heartbeat finds less room
    inside the thick, waiting steel;
    then comes the valve's relieving song
    each stanza lifts with rising steam

    d’Verse: Ars poetica revisited

    At d’Verse, we are encouraged to write an Ars Poetica that reveals our relationship with poetry through imagery, symbolism, or personification, showing our writing process rather than simply explaining it.

  9. A quotation from The Bible

    Nothing is to be done out of jealousy or vanity; instead, out of humility of mind everyone should give preference to others, everyone pursuing not selfish interests but those of others.

  10. A quotation from Bertrand Russell

    The man who underestimates himself is perpetually being surprised by success, whereas the man who overestimates himself is just as often surprised by failure. The former kind of surprise is pleasant, the latter unpleasant. It is therefore wise to be not unduly conceited, though also not too modest to be enterprising.

    Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) English mathematician and philosopher
    Conquest of Happiness, Part 2, ch. 10 “Is Happiness Still Possible?” (1930)

  11. A quotation from Moliere

    ELMIRE: No, amorous men are gullible. Their conceit
       So blinds them that they’re never hard to cheat.

    [Non; on est aisément dupé par ce qu’on aime.
    Et l’amour-propre engage à se tromper soi-même.]

    Molière (1622-1673) French playwright, actor [stage name for Jean-Baptiste Poquelin]
    Tartuffe, or the Hypocrite [Le Tartuffe, ou L’Imposteur], Act 4, sc. 3 (1669) [tr. Wilbur (1963)]

  12. @gerrymcgovern

    Arrogance and entitlement barely scratches the surface; that argument (used by Zuck and various "AI" companies) boils down to "As long as we steal enough material, from enough different people, then it's not copyright infringement".

    Kind of the opposite of what Big Content argued in Napster et al, I think.

    Siccing Big Content's lawyers on Big Tech would have me reaching for the #popcorn.

  14. A quotation from Jerome, Jerome K.:

    «
    I don’t believe any man ever existed without vanity, and if he did he would be an extremely uncomfortable person to have anything to do with. He would, of course, be a very good man, and we should respect him very much. He would be a very admirable man — a man to be put under a glass case and shown round as a specimen — a man to be …
