  9. A quotation from Montaigne

We readily acknowledge in others an advantage in courage, in bodily strength, in experience, in agility, in beauty; but an advantage in judgment we yield to no one. And the arguments that come from simple natural reasoning in others, we think we would have found if we had merely glanced in that direction.

  11. A quotation from Euripides

MEDEA:                     Let no one think of me
As humble or weak or passive; let them understand
I am of a different kind: dangerous to my enemies,
Loyal to my friends. To such a life glory belongs.

  12. A quotation from Montaigne

There is another kind of “glory”: conceiving too high an opinion of our worth. This is an undeserved feeling by which we value ourselves, and that makes us think ourselves different than we are, just as the passion of love lends beauties and graces to the object it embraces and makes those smitten by it — with their judgment blurred and altered — find what they love different, and more perfect, than it is.

  14. A quotation from Marcus Aurelius

Often have I marvelled how each one of us loves himself above all men, yet sets less store by his own opinion of himself than by that of everyone else.

  15. A quotation from Lincoln

I desire to conduct the affairs of this administration that if at the end, when I come to lay down the reins of power, I have lost every other friend on earth, I shall at least have one friend left, and that friend shall be down inside of me.

Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865) American lawyer, politician, US President (1861–65)

  16. A quotation from George Washington

Though in reviewing the incidents of my Administration I am unconscious of intentional error, I am nevertheless too sensible of my defects not to think it probable that I may have committed many errors. Whatever they may be, I fervently beseech the Almighty to avert or mitigate the evils to which they may tend. I shall also carry with me the hope that my country will never cease to view them with indulgence, and that, after forty-five years of my life dedicated to its service with an upright zeal, the faults of incompetent abilities will be consigned to oblivion, as myself must soon be to the mansions of rest.

George Washington (1732–1799) American military leader, Founding Father, US President (1789–1797)
Letter (1796-09-17), "Farewell Address" [with J. Madison, A. Hamilton]

Because I have reached Paris, I am not ashamed of having passed through Newhaven and Dieppe. They were very good places to pass through, and I am none the less at my destination. 30. CW: UK Self Assessment, serious, advice

Alright if you're at this point and you genuinenly haven't done your SA return, you only have today to avoid a fine.

    1. Get your bank statements together for the year covering April 6th 2022 to April 5th 2023. If you have shares you'll also need your dividend statements, if you have savings you'll need your annual tax statement from the financial institution

    2. Organise your income entries into the ones that were taxed at source (if you have a PAYE job too) and the ones you took without tax (those times you paid yourself a lump from the business account to tide you over and didn't pay it back). If you're self employed and your current account is your business account, you're going to need some coffee

    3. Organise your outgoings into legit business expenses (don't fuck about now), payments into your pension pot and personal expenses you paid from your business (that's personal income too).
3a. If you have money in the business account you don't have a need for and can make a payment to your personal pension today, do it

    4. If you have a PAYE job you need your P60. If you don't have it you need your payslip from March 2023. If you don't have either check if you have an online portal for your employer you can get them from

    5. If at this point you still have other income - property etc - that you need to assess you're too late, you won't get this done today. Contact a tax advisor (why don't you have one already?)

    6. If you claim Gift Aid on your charity payments don't panic if you can't fill this section out, it doesn't matter too much, it affects your basic relief but we're probably talking pennies

    7. Whether you want HMRC to collect underpayments from your tax code or not is up to you, but remember HMRC will make an estimation of the tax you will later need to pay and will expect 50% to be paid by the summer so they may overdeduct if your earnings are due to change (decrease). Personally I prefer to pay upfront and manage it myself

    8. AND THIS IS IMPORTANT - you can submit a preliminary return now if you don't have everything you need. Payment isn't due yet, you can fix it later, but it will help you avoid a fine. TICK THE BOX THAT SAYS YOU'RE DOING THIS (box 20 on the main return). Then get your shit together quickly, don't leave this because you've done the minimum needed now, it's still important to complete it

    9. It's legit to say you don't want to make a balancing payment forward of the due date if you don't think you'll be earning by the next return date. Give your reasoning, it will probably be accepted and may even get you deregistered from SA if it's appropriate

    10. If you can afford to pay now, get it out of the way. HMRC will accrue interest on the payment in advance that you can use on your next tax bill, and you won't have to have another panic attack in July
