  15. A quotation from Robert Hogan

There’s a reason narcissists don’t learn from mistakes and that’s because they never get past the first step, which is admitting that they made one. It’s always an assistant’s fault, an adviser’s fault, a lawyer’s fault. Ask them to account for a mistake any other way and they’ll say, “What mistake?”

  21. artist / title not found, I think it says "Schwarting" in the lower left. Pschiatric Bulletin, 1953? Persecution?

Something about running from the truth, and the psychology of that. We need to maintain our front or else it all falls down. A lot of people do whatever they can get away with, and then work overtime to justify it.

But the others know, and they will always know, and they have always known. They saw what you did. They remember that thing.

That's what I saw in this. Not the persecution of the innocent but the projected persecution of the guilty. Easy to see enemies everywhere if you know you deserve enemies.

  22. A quotation from George Washington

Though in reviewing the incidents of my Administration I am unconscious of intentional error, I am nevertheless too sensible of my defects not to think it probable that I may have committed many errors. Whatever they may be, I fervently beseech the Almighty to avert or mitigate the evils to which they may tend. I shall also carry with me the hope that my country will never cease to view them with indulgence, and that, after forty-five years of my life dedicated to its service with an upright zeal, the faults of incompetent abilities will be consigned to oblivion, as myself must soon be to the mansions of rest.

George Washington (1732–1799) American military leader, Founding Father, US President (1789–1797)

  23. A quotation from Ambrose Bierce

INCORPORATION, n. The act of uniting several persons into one fiction called a corporation, in order that they may be no longer responsible for its actions. A, B and C are a corporation. A robs, B steals and C (it is necessary that there be one gentleman in the concern) cheats. It is a plundering, thieving, swindling corporation. But A, B and C, who have jointly determined and severally executed every crime of the corporation, are blameless. It is wrong to mention them by name when censuring their acts as a corporation, but right when praising.

Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?) American writer and journalist
“Incorporation,” “Devil’s Dictionary” column, San Francisco Wasp (1885-10-03)

  24. A quotation from Henry Commager

When a people are confronted with problems that are both incomprehensible and unbearable, they lash out not at those who contrived the problems but at those who expose them. When they are confronted by moral problems that they find insoluble, or perhaps intolerable, they blame the moralists. The anxieties, tensions, revulsions of our day create an atmosphere in which it is almost impossible to think clearly and dispassionately about just those problems which most imperatively require reason and objectivity — problems of adjustment to fundamental change.

Henry Steele Commager (1902-1998) American historian, writer, activist
Speech (1971-04-10), “The University and the Community of Learning,” Kent State University, Ohio

  32. Today, Pete Stauber Learned How Quotation Marks Work

This video clip is from today’s House Natural Resources hearing, where Representative Jared Huffman offered an amendment to Stauber’s HR 4090.

As both Huffman and Teresa Leger Fernandez suggest in the discussion that follows, this incident is not just a one-off. It’s an example of a much larger problem of bad faith in public discourse.

Update 26 September 2025: A version of the same problem crops up again in Lindsey Halligan’s dodgy indictment of James Comey. As Ken Dilanian observes, “the indictment appears to attribute to Comey words he never uttered,” and it uses quotation marks to do so. Halligan is in fact quoting a question put to Comey in 2020 by Ted Cruz, who is in turn quoting Chuck Grassley’s question to Comey in 2017. I can’t say whether this exonerates Comey or gets the indictment thrown out, as some are speculating it will, but I’m interested to see how the judge deals with the misattribution.
