Pearl Diver: A wake-up call

Because, underneath all of this is the real truth we have been avoiding: climate change isn’t an “issue” to add to the list of things to worry about, next to health care and taxes. It is a civilizational wake-up call. A powerful message—spoken in the language of fires, floods, droughts, and extinctions—telling us that we need an entirely new economic model and a new way of sharing this planet. Telling us that we need to evolve.

By now, the shocking images spreading on social media following the devastating mudslides caused by a glacial collapse in the Nepal-China border area should leave everyone horrified.

However, that horror should not stem from the ferocious, destructive power of the forces of nature. Mother Nature did not release a deluge of ice, water, mud and rocks upon unsuspecting villagers without provocation. She was compelled by human neglect, blatant complicity in global warming and climate change and, sadly, even denial!

Wealthy industrialised nations are the biggest contributors to global warming and climate change. While most of these nations have routinely pledged to reduce emissions, among other measures to tackle the man-made problem, one nation stands out depressingly in denial and shame.

The US government (led by the Trump administration), which loves to lecture other countries on practically every aspect of life, stands out as not only a major contributor, but also a primary denier of this phenomenon. The devastating result is that a poor nation whose contribution to climate change and global warming is negligible is unfairly bearing the full brunt of the problem.

There is a song I love about human greed, materialism, and environmental exploitation that almost brings tears to my eyes. It is by folk singer-songwriter David Roth, and it issues a dire warning about our complicity and denial. There are lines like the following which are particularly evocative:

Dump their garbage overground
Invade the air with greed
Exploit the wind and use the land
For things that they don’t need…

And…

And I can taste the toxic waters
Hear every splash of waste
I see how man has used the sea
Diluting his distaste…

Now I am eternal witness
To the tide that man has turned

I have said it before, but find it so hard to understand why #NaomiKlein does not use her clout to help people move away from what is simply yet another proprietary platform trap (Substack).

It stands in such contrast with her analysis of the world, and the practical, community building politics that (I think) she stands for.

I understand you cannot be on top of every latest development in every field, but doesn't she have people around her who can guide her? @avilewis ?

As the planet burns and shared reality melts, a new iteration of the far right is on the march. How can we understand this dangerous development, and what resources can we draw on to resist it? In their scathing assessment of the contemporary scene, the celebrated activists and authors Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor explore how the religious fundamentalists, Silicon Valley technologists, and ethno-nationalists who make up this apocalyptic alliance share more than one might think: they are united in their belief that some kind of cleansing cataclysm is coming, whether through the manifestation of messianic prophecy, the rampages of a resource-and job-consuming artificial intelligence, or the purported existential threat of immigration and cultural replacement. Rather than avoiding this conflagration, they welcome it, convinced they will be among the saved on the other side.

'End times fascism' is the ideology of the actors who strive to make the world unlivable and then seek to protect themselves from the fallout. The new survivalists have accumulated power, but they are far from impregnable. As Klein and Taylor show in *End Times Fascism* via original reporting and analysis, the many internal conflicts and contradictions and the nihilistic inability to envision a shared future, even for ostensible allies, leave these survivalists vulnerable to a new kind of 'pro-life' politics rooted in reverence for our shared existence and regard for the earth we inhabit and must protect.

What happens when you realise a crisis isn’t always treated as a tragedy? Book review: The Shock Doctrine

I finished The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein and immediately had the uncomfortable experience of wanting to recommend a book that made me deeply uncomfortable.

I don’t believe in every argument Naomi makes; however, I wanted to recommend it because, whether you agree with her or not, she definitely changes the way you look at the world once finished and surely that’s a book worthwhile.

Published in 2007, the book explores a simple but unsettling idea that moments of collective crisis, whether natural disasters, wars, financial collapse or political upheaval, often create opportunities to push through economic policies that would ordinarily face far greater resistance.

Sinister, I know. Naomi traces this argument across decades and continents, weaving together economics, politics and history into a narrative that’s equal parts investigative journalism and historical analysis. She moves from Chile under Augusto Pinochet to post-Soviet Russia, the invasion of Iraq, Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, arguing that each crisis became an opportunity for sweeping political and economic change.

Reading it felt like watching hundreds of seemingly unrelated events slowly click together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

Whether that pattern convinces you is almost secondary. The real value of the book lies in the questions it leaves behind…

Who benefits from crisis, who decides what recovery looks like and who exactly are we rebuilding for?

I found myself thinking whilst reading the hurricane Katrina chapter (one of the many crises mentioned in the book) how we often describe events as inevitable, as though history simply unfolded on its own. Klein makes you question the opposite as she asks us to consider who made decisions in the background, who held power and who profited from moments when everyone else was distracted by survival.

It’s a perspective I don’t think I’ll easily shake moving forward, especially as someone studying health science. I couldn’t help but draw parallels with public health.

Despite it being the most uncomfortable reading experience of 2026 thus far, I have to rate it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I tried to read it without annotating to much on my first pass as I suspect I’ll revisit this repeatedly over the years underlining sentences and adding thoughts.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, with one caveat. Read it as an argument to interrogate rather than form a solid conclusion. And definitely follow the footnotes and additional research in the back for a comprehensive overview of what Naomi is talking about.

Who is this for?

I think readers interested in political economy, history and public policy will get the most from it. That said, don’t let the subject matter put you off. Klein writes in an accessible, engaging style and despite its length and extensive footnotes, I found it surprisingly easy to read.

I love how they ALL sidestep that 'innocuous' observation, oh and by the way, not unlike #NaomiKlein dismissing #ThomasPiketty as a fringe kook in two phrases scattered in her book.

Then again, perhaps, like me and John Cage, they are actually eager to smash The System? Perhaps I should enthusiastically endorse them.

Last Tuesday, Canadian author, documentarian and activist Naomi Klein admitted on Bluesky that she 'truly f—ked up' for not doing her 'due diligence' on Graham Platner, who recently won the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Maine, before she praised him as an 'extraordinary political communicator' in March.

Klein’s apology followed last Monday’s publication of Politico’s interview with Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old woman who accused Platner of forcing her to have sex with him five years ago, after she objected.

In her post on last Tuesday, Klein admitted that, 'Enough was out there at the time,' and that she 'should have been more cautious,' while apologizing to women 'who came forward only to be disbelieved and smeared.' This mistake, she wrote, 'gutted' her.

What Klein failed to mention was that months before she praised Planter, he admitted on a podcast that he had a Nazi SS emblem tattooed on his chest.

... think about the purpose the utopian hallucinations about AI are serving. What work are these benevolent stories doing in the culture as we encounter these strange new tools? Here is one hypothesis: they are the powerful and enticing cover stories for what may turn out to be the largest and most consequential theft in human history. Because what we are witnessing is the wealthiest companies in history ( #Microsoft, #Apple, #Google, #Meta, #Amazon …) unilaterally seizing the sum total of human knowledge that exists in digital, scrapable form and walling it off inside proprietary products, many of which will take direct aim at the humans whose lifetime of labor trained the machines without giving permission or consent.
