  21. So, let's talk Christmas and holidays and social expections around that sort of thing...

    A useful way to think about tradition is that it is peer pressure from dead people.

    We don't have to do anything in the holidays that we don't want to. We don't have to follow traditions or go to events that don't work for us.

    (No is a complete sentence, too, by the way!)

    If your brain needs you to have a quiet Christmas with no surprises and no unplanned visits, then that's what you should try to give yourself.

    Of course, old habits die hard and being able to set boundaries and advocate for yourself is a skill that requires some confidence and practice...but if you don't start getting better at that skill at some point, then nothing will ever change.

    If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got. And that will apply to things like Christmas and other family gatherings and traditions, too.

    So what can you do to skill up and get what you need?

    A top tip for communicating your needs and boundaries around this time is to use scripting.

    You can plan in advance what you want to say using a formula, and it helps you to remember and package your words clearly when you're talking to people.

    You can say things like
    1 At this time of year, we find that...

    2 This means that we need...

    3 We are very grateful for you doing/not doing the following...

    This gives you something like:

    "At this time of year, we find that unplanned visits are a bit overwhelming. This means we need to agree visits in advance. We are very grateful for you texting us to see when we are free and happy to welcome you in for some cake!"

  22. How was your day today? Let's have a gentle check-in together as we bring this day to an end.

    Sometimes it can be helpful to get a prompt to just stop for a few minutes and reflect on what went on and how you feel...

    ...And consider if you need anything!

    So, how WAS your day?

    What was the highlight? (However small or minor.)

    What didn't go to plan or what did you find challenging? (And can you be gentle on yourself and accept that if it was hard, it was hard?)

    And what do you actually need right now?

    Are you fed and watered and warm enough? Check in with your basic needs and, if I able, meet any that aren't met yet.

    I hope you are able to do one nice thing to care for yourself as you close off the day.

    For me, it's a slice of pizza and a cuddle with my puppy. That's what I need.
