  1. "Tree of Paradise," Séraphine Louis, 1926.

Louis (1864-1942) was a self-taught painter inspired by her own intense religious faith, and stained-glass windows in her local church.

A domestic servant, first at a local convent and later by assorted bourgeois families in the town of Senlis, she painted privately on various objects until 1912, when one of her employers, an art collector, stumbled on her work and was greatly impressed. He encouraged her to work more and supplied paints and canvases for her to work on. She was launched into a world of critical and financial success...but was ill-equipped to handle it and lost most of the money she made.

By 1932 her mental health, which was always wobbly, deteriorated to the point that she had to be institutionalized. She spent the rest of her life in an institution, sadly denied any sort of artistic outlet. Today she is remembered as a significant outsider artist.

From the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

  2. Capitalist Interaction Story #2 (not as happy as the last one):

My partner is in another city, traveling for work. The luck of the draw gave her a brand new Mustang as a rental. Oh, nice!

Not all nice (see image for text from partner about Ford aggressively harvesting data from her phone just to use #bluetooth).

  3. Musical Interlude: I love Mary Chapin Carpenter and this moving, understated song is a gem. It's a true story of a deaf mute young man, seemingly abandoned by his family, and put in institutions for the rest of his life, judged "feeble minded." It wasn't until after he went blind that staffers realized that he was actually pretty smart and just in need of some care and education. However, his true identity was never known. He's the topic of a book, "God Knows His Name" which I need to read.

"John Doe No. 24," performed by Mary Chapin Carpenter.

  4. "Still Life with Celery,: Léon Bonvin, 1865.

Bonvin (1834-1866) was a Realist painter of still lifes, genre scenes, and melancholic landscapes. From a poor family, he was largely self-taught, and was never a professional artist. He worked as an innkeeper and painted mostly in the early mornings. However, his work was rejected by dealers and galleries and he died by suicide at 31.

His stepbrother, in an attempt to provide for Bonvin's family, held a huge sale of all his remaining art, and other artists, like Monet and Fantin-Latour, donated works to be sold as well. Bonvin's work was purchased by collectors, the largest being here in Baltimore.

From the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD.

  5. CW: Mental illness, suicide.

"Almond Blossom," Vincent van Gogh, February, 1890.

We all know van Gogh (1853-1890). This is a lovely early-spring scene, with blossoms on the branches of an almond tree against a blue sky. I like the perspective, as if one is standing under the tree and looking up through the branches. It's also very much in the style of the Japanese art that Impressionists loved so much.

This was painted while Vincent was suffering a major relapse in his mental health, while at the asylum in Saint-Remy. It was done as a present for his newborn nephew, also named Vincent, although perhaps one can also sense a soul yearning for the light. Vincent died by suicide in November of that year; it's speculated he had bipolar disorder, although porphyria and epilepsy have also been proposed.

From the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, started by the nephew this painting was gifted to.

  6. Tell me if something like this has happened to you or someone you know:

You have a shoebox with new shoes to return to the store (reasons). You leave the box at the garage door so you're sure to pick it up next time you go out.

Meanwhile, recycle day comes around and someone in your household dutifully drops off the shoebox in the recycle container.

And you look for the shoebox the day after recycle day.

Moral: Shoes ought to be light but not that much.

  7. Only two of the commuter trains crosses the border from Hungary, to the first town beyond. MÁV runs it’s shittiest diesel trains on the line, travelling at 60km/h average. Many newly built stations got moved far away from town centers. The ticket offices have been closed since 2012.

Nobody uses these trains. There is some cargo traffic though. #trains #hungary #slovenia #SadStory
