  1. "Still Life with Celery,: Léon Bonvin, 1865.

Bonvin (1834-1866) was a Realist painter of still lifes, genre scenes, and melancholic landscapes. From a poor family, he was largely self-taught, and was never a professional artist. He worked as an innkeeper and painted mostly in the early mornings. However, his work was rejected by dealers and galleries and he died by suicide at 31.

His stepbrother, in an attempt to provide for Bonvin's family, held a huge sale of all his remaining art, and other artists, like Monet and Fantin-Latour, donated works to be sold as well. Bonvin's work was purchased by collectors, the largest being here in Baltimore.

From the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD.
