I wasn't aware till yesterday that Billy Ocean had applied his smooth voice to The Long and Winding Road, and the quiet storm approach overall suits it well, probably better than the Spector wall of sound approach or the Naked version. In the context of 1969, I guess this would be best approximated by handing over the vocals and keys mostly to Billy Preston.

Well, if like me you're old enough to remember 'Quiet Storm' - the slow but groove-driven, R'n'B lovers ballads of the 1980s, which drew strongly on the Philly vibe from the 70s (think Anita Baker, Jean Carne), then you be intrigued that Slow Jam nights are picking up in club land.

I woke up early this morning with my voice shot due to this little cold. But I was in the mood for some reason to listen to some “quiet storm” type of grooves.
There’s a few fun things with that tag on Bandcamp, here’s the best one I found (a fake radio broadcast mixtape from Brazil):

Has there ever been a musical genre more stagnant than “smooth jazz”? The new releases sound exactly the same as they did 40 years ago. Rule #1 of real jazz is “continue to innovate.” Shows you what this stuff is.

A quickie that I made last night. I guess I can file this as my new late 80s/early 90s AC/Quiet Storm template.
Can't you just imagine Peabo Bryson or David Pack over these sounds? Well, I hope you can!

QUIET STORM. Far too many people would write this off as schlock the instant the e-piano strikes the first note.
Not with that voice it isn't!
Also poignant, of course, because it was released five months after hear death at 45. It entered the Billboard R&B charts OTD in 1995 (27 years ago!).
