  1. Opinion piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Saturday Feb 1, by Jane Esberg:

"I am a scholar of authoritarian politics at the University of Pennsylvania. I research and teach about repression and censorship. The Trump administration is engaged in state terror. And, in a page ripped from the autocrat’s playbook, they are trying to convince us that the victims deserve it."

  2. The Inquirer is my local paper, which I read online, mostly off their newsletters. This is a cool story about catching brinks truck robbers, but also there is a box at the start of the story that cites the sources for the reporting. Actual sources, you know, not the most recent rabidly racist social media post!

  3. Will Bunch of the #PhiladelphiaInquirer has an article on the recent shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas, including info ICE tried to keep hidden: the names of the detained immigrants who were killed:

    Norlán Guzmán Fuentes
    Miguel Ángel García Hernandez

    Gravely wounded:
    José Andrés Bordones Molina

The whole editorial is worth reading.

  5. “The ‘Heat Index’ newspaper insert published by the #ChicagoSunTimes and the #PhiladelphiaInquirer contained AI-generated misinformation and reading lists full of books that don’t exist.” It “was created by a subsidiary of the [publishing] giant #Hearst.”

  6. @IveyJanette
I tried to find a way to give a gift link to the article, but I guess my Inquirer subscription doesn’t support them.

Ps— The Inquirer is a great paper!

  7. The #PhiladelphiaInquirer reports 4/24 on a Black veteran, Maurice Byrd, who shot a white man in self-defense. Mr Byrd had called 911 as the altercation escalated; neighbors had video of him trying to de-escalate the conflict; and when the police arrived at the scene after the shooting, Mr Byrd had his driver's license, military ID, and gun permit laid out waiting for them on the ground next to his weapon.

Prosecutor charged him with 1st degree murder. He was in jail for 10 months awaiting trial.

And now he is one of the about 1% of Black people who tell the court that their shooting of a white person was self-defense, to have shooting found to be justified.

After about 10 months in jail charged with a crime that there was ample evidence he didn't commit, held under charges that should never have been brought, Byrd was found not guilty. But he's lost his business. There's a GoFundMe on his behalf.

  9. “For decades, the government has recognized that everyone — no matter their immigration status — should be able to attend houses of worship without fear of a warrantless government raid.” cc: @friendsjournal

    “The Philadelphia Inquirer”

It’s owned by a nonprofit foundation, has excellent columnists & reports on national matters. It endorsed Harris.

Not a national paper, but an important paper in a large east coast metro area.

    I’m proud to say I’m a subscriber.

  11. "The Guardian U.S. might be one of the biggest winners. …

U.S. readers pledged $2.16 million [to The Guardian's fundraising campaign]. (That’s an additional $1.5 million since Saturday night.) The campaign broke the Guardian U.S. record for fundraising twice; first setting a one-day record on Friday with $485,000 raised and then topping that on Saturday with an additional $619,000 raised."

  12. Sarah Scire reports that publications endorsing Harris, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and The Guardian, are capitalizing on the controversy Jeff Bezos has caused by yanking a Washington Post endorsement of Harris. Other publications endorsing Harris are now racking up new subscribers.

  14. As a native Philadelphian, I'm thrilled to see the #PhiladelphiaInquirer show the rest of the nation's newspapers how a proper endorsement is DONE.

"If elected, Harris, 60, would be the first Black, South Asian woman to hold the nation’s highest office. She rarely references her historic candidacy, and instead is laser-focused on earning votes through the substance of her vision, ideas, and temperament."

  15. A few people I've seen online have mentioned that while the Washington Post and the NY Times don't have the resolve to make an endorsement in this year's presidential race, the Philadelphia Inquirer does. You can read their endorsement of Kamala Harris for President at inquirer.com/opinion/editorial

I used to subscribe to all three newspapers. As of five minutes ago, I subscribe only to the Inquirer.
