  1. @Wen Ireland is ahead of the UK on this. Our #HSE is in such #permacrisis that in #GalwayUniversityHospital the corridors are stuffed all year round with people on trollies. Winter crisis is when they run out of trollies.

Ireland has had 25 years of the heavily-privatised medical service that the UK's #NHS is being driven towards.

  3. I'm fond of reading the letters to agony aunts, but rarely their replies. However, this letter probably sums up how most people, with an ounce of awareness about what's going on in the world, feel at the moment, that I felt compelled to read the advice.

And the advice quotes Voltaire and I think is very good:

May actually actually inspire me to read Voltaire.

  5. The Washington Post talks of "a “#permacrisis,” of a world buckling under a never-ending cascade of calamity — war, #climate catastrophe, energy price chaos, #inflation, epidemics of hunger and disease, political instability and widening economic #inequity. "

The New Republic connects the dots: "These are serious issues. They’re also issues that many of the corporations bankrolling the World Economic Forum have contributed to, with abandon."

  7. 48% of workers said their wellbeing declined in 2022, and 28% said they are miserable at work.
People worries and that's not good news for #mentahealth
Do we really need to keep up with current news?

  9. @ChrisBataille in that respect it's surprising there aren't more pop songs about #climateCrisis and the loss of #biodiversity - perhaps it's harder to get creative over also burning #permacrisis than the threat of overnight annihilation?

  11. The word #Collapse appears 4 times in this diagram of the #Davos-released #WEF risks report. I don't remember seeing them use that word before. Elites aren't known for their proximity to reality, but something's penetrating their luxury bubbles. #polycrisis #permacrisis

  13. It does feel as though we are living through an era of #permacrisis. This predicament is not a new one it seems, but malevolent actors have more power and influence than ever before when mentally we all want to baton down the hatches.

Creativity and unity is hard under these conditions, but it is ultimately what has enabled human kind to get this far and what will project us into the future.

  15. Have the growing crises & inequities of #late capitalism inevitably resulted in a #permacrisis in which societies unravel?

    Asking for a friend.

  16. #GoblinMode is good but #Permacrisis seems like the better choice. After all it’s the leading cause of goblin mode in the first place. collinsdictionary.com/woty

  17. A challenger to goblin mode appears:
"‘Permacrisis’, a term that describes ‘an extended period of instability and insecurity’, has been named Collins Word of the Year 2022. It is one of several words Collins highlights that relate to ongoing crises the UK and the world have faced and continue to face, including political instability, the war in Ukraine, climate change, and the cost-of-living crisis."

  19. Thank you to the Conservative party for Word of the Year: #Permacrisis

Not a word you'll find in non brexit countries as much.

  20. Collins Dictionary 2022'de yılın sözcüğü olarak şunu seçmiş: #permacrisis (permanent crisis).

    Zamanın ruhunu güzel özetlemiş.

  21. In an era of perma-crisis, our governing institutions need to enable resilience & local adaptation to respond.

The shocks of inflation, pandemics and the climate emergency have different local consequences: rigid nationally-led systems have diminishing returns.

  22. CW: Depressing but true.

When was the last time you had a casual conversation of more than 1 minute with anyone, that did not touch upon pandemics, climate change, the war in Ukraine, inflation, the rise of authoritarianism, or all of the above? To think that most of this #permacrisis that's afflicting humanity is self-inflicted makes it all the more unbearable. Yet it means we do have some agency. We need hope.

  23. Collins Dictionary in the UK announced its "Word of the Year" for 2022 on Tuesday: permacrisis.

The word refers to a never-ending cycle of crises, for example, the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with climate change and political chaos and scandals such as seen in Britain this year.

The UK has had three prime ministers in the last three months. Every premier since the 2016 Brexit vote has had to resign.
