  1. Officially, South Africa's Word of the Year for 2025 was "G20". GoodThingsGuy disagreed, though: goodthingsguy.com/opinion/real

What would you say the real Word of the Year was for 2025? Or do you agree with it being "G20"?

  3. "Luddite" deserves to be a top word of the year, considering how much we've hollered about the trash that some call AI in 2025. People wrongly think that a Luddite hates technology. Many Luddites seem incredibly open to new ideas. What is your favorite advancement of the year?

  8. ‘Rage bait’ is crowned Oxford’s Word of the Year for 2025.

“Rage bait” triumphed over “biohack” and “aura farming” to become Oxford’s Word of the Year 2025.

The two-syllable open-compound word refers to an attention-seeking form of online behaviour that leads nowhere good.

  9. So the Oxford University Press Word of the year is "rage bait" which narrowly fought off aura farming and biohack. Last year it was brainrot. Humanity's relationship with social media clearly isn't healthy. We need to show more discernment in our reading procurement. I would rather ask a librarian rather than Musk's or Zuckerberg's algorithms what to read next. An hour in your local library beats an hour scrolling. 17. Words of the Year 2024

Dictionary.com names ‘demure’ as its word of the year for 2024 [1]. Demure means characterized by shyness and modesty; reserved.

Oxford University Press names "brain rot" as the word of the year for 2024 {2]. As per Wikipedia [3],
    >"In Internet culture, brain rot (or brainrot) refers to any Internet content deemed to be of low quality or value, or the supposed negative psychological and cognitive effects caused by it. The term also refers to excessive use of digital media, especially short-form entertainment, which may affect cognitive health."

Amongst the six short listed candidates by Oxford University Press [4], I also liked the word "slop" which means art, writing, or other content generated using artificial intelligence, shared and distributed online in an indiscriminate or intrusive way, and characterized as being of low quality, inauthentic, or inaccurate.

From my perspective both brain rot and slop are more relevant.

  18. ”But brain rot is not just a linguistic quirk. Over the past decade, scientific studies have shown that consuming excessive amounts of junk content — including sensationalist news, conspiracy theories and vacuous entertainment — can profoundly affect our brains. In other words, “rot” may not be that big of an exaggeration when it comes to describing the impact of low-quality online content.“

In 2024, ‘brain rot’ is used to describe both the cause and effect of this, referring to low-quality, low-value content found on social media and the internet, as well as the subsequent negative impact that consuming this type of content is perceived to have on an individual or society.

"We’re all living through the enshittocene, a great enshittening, in which the services that matter to us, that we rely on, are turning into giant piles of shit,” author Cory Doctorow said earlier this year.
