"From the early 1800s through the mid-20th century, the U.S. Indian boarding school system sought to erase Native identity by forcibly removing children from their homes, languages, and cultures. Many endured neglect, abuse, and deep loss; thousands never made it back to their families. The generational trauma caused by these institutions continues to impact Native Nations today."

  3. On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, I’ve donated one day’s pay or what I could afford to the organizations listed on the One Day’s Pay page. Will you consider doing the same? #NDTR #TruthAndReconciliation #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters onedayspay.ca

  4. "Forced child labour was not an accident of the system—it was its foundation. For over seventy-five years, Youville relied on the unpaid labour of Indigenous children. They scrubbed floors, hauled water, wrung laundry through heavy mangles, farmed, carried honey buckets, and cooked. [...] The work was also meant to teach obedience and enforce control."

  11. Arrived on Tseshaht reserve after the long walk. Former site of #AIRS. There are still a couple buildings left from the old school. The fire pit is where the main hall was. An administrative building on the left and a gymnasium on the right remain. Both are going to be torn down and replaced in good time. #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #NDTR

  12. Right now. Gathering and singing on stolen un-ceded territories of Tseshaht and Hupacasath before the walk to the site of the former Indian Residential School #AIRS #PortAlberni #NDTR #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation

  13. This year marks 50 years since the Alberni Indian Residential School was closed. It was closed because of action by First Nations people here themselves, with the leadership of George Watts. Many other schools remained open for many more years. And the main buildings weren't demolished until 2009.

"It was in July 1973 that the West Coast District Council of Indian Chiefs (which later became Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council) sent a letter to the Department of Indian Affairs, propositioning the closure of the residential school. This letter, signed by the West Coast Council’s chairman George Watts, led to a meeting between Canada and Nuu-chah-nulth leaders. On Aug. 31, 1973, AIRS closed its doors forever.”
